So this is long and I need an honest

My husband is applying this year for 2014 match. His scores include 221/208 however 3 weeks ago we learned he failed his CS. the earliest date we could find is January. Other then this, he has USCE in psychiatry, anesthesia, and in medicine. He also has an upcoming observership with a hospital in January. He does not require a visa as he is a green card holder.

Now my question is he is applying to IM, FM, and psychiatry. What are his chances in psychiatry as he is mostly interested in psych. where should he apply most, and if he doesn't match how should he plan this upcoming year? We loaded all the programs from match a resident due to this attempt.

Please help. And information would be extremely useful.

252(2)/250 (1)/Pass(1)/2014/Rotations in US/J1-Visa

So my red flags:
-2 Attempts on Step 1-
-Gap in school almost 2 years due to USMLE failure-
-J1 Visa-
Only plus:
- My rotations are American
- Got to do Psych Electives

Spent months making the perfect list for myself and I found 70 Psych programs, 100 FM and 30 IM. I probably won't apply to IM but the money and list is there so I will take tomorrow to think about it.

Good luck everyone!

Default Any response from programs?

Hi people, I'm a IMG and am applying primarily to psych programs. Applied to 85 psych programs mainly in the east coast. I just got a rejection from Albany and from Buffalo. Can you guys please share the responses from programs you've gotten so far?

My Step 1 score is 231, Step 2 score is 233 and I've passed CS, haven't done Step 3. Graduated in 2010.

Congratulations on the great score!

Haven't heard from Washington programs. Didn't apply to kansas programs or case medical center in cleveland.

Any one heard back from Cleveland Clinic Foundation Program?

Thumbs Up Don't Give Up, Don't Let the Negative People Discourage You!!!

Ok Guys, Here is my situation:
IMG, on J-1 visa.
Step-1= 218 (first attempt)
Step2Cs passed first attempt
CK=passes with 197 (yes, 197!!) first attempt.
13 years post grad. Everyone said its end of my road. I said shut up whoever is saying NO to me, so I did research, published (2 first author, 4 co-author), at high rank university in US, made connection etc.
Research irrelevant to what I wanted to do, psychiatry. So far I got observership through connection (they liked me and might get me as residents) and got my first interview by 1st of Oct in a Psych program in NY.
Ok, I know it does not mean I got the position, but I did something everyone was telling me is impossible. Dont lose hope if you failed in one step, try to find an alternative way. I am not good at self-presenting or selling myself, Im not aggressive, I just was myself, Im honest, kind and caring. Some people appreciate that over fake self-presentations.
Best of luck everyone

Hi
179(ouch)/222(2) CS passed graduated 2011 and I have a green card

I have gotten 5 rejections and one interview. Iīm very stressed cause I know my step one score makes me a bad applicant I just hope the fact that I donīt need a visa sort of balances it out a little.

I keep staring at my email and I wonder if thereīs something else I could be doing... I applied to 75 programs, I wonder if I should apply to more (prob to late) or send emails to the programs or just sit tight and keep waiting.

What do you guys think?

Can anyone tell me what percentage of Psych programs require step 3? Wish you all good luck for the match.

I applied there too. No replies. Have one interview so far from UVA. Are psych IVs coming in later than IM? Friends applying to IM already have 5-6 interviews.

Not all programs will respond. You may not get rejections or IVs from some of the programs. That's what's so nerve wracking. I'm having trouble arranging travel details too, although I am in the US. Where did you get the IV from?

If they want to send you an IV, they will. If they are not inviting you, they may send you a rejection letter or nothing at all. For example, I haven't received anything from VCU, no IV, no rejection and I now know that you have a IV from VCU which makes me think that VCU has in fact rejected my application. When did you receive the IV? If you don't mind, can you please tell me your scores and other credentials?

Hey guys, I've applied to over 80 psychiatry programs.
217(1)/207(2)/CS(1)/2013/USCE/US Citizen

What are my chances? No IV yet and 2 rejections.

I'd say you have a pretty good chance of getting IVs and matching, just given the fact that you are a US citizen. I don't know why you still have not received any IVs. Are the responses from psych programs truly slower than other programs? People applying to other programs have at least 5 IVs stacked up by now.

Just an update: So far have received 4 interviews:3 in Psychiatry (two in NY, one in MA) and one in Internal Med (MA). Im telling you, dont give up...There are chances for everyone , even for someone like me with 198 Step-2 (75)!

And by the way, talking to 4 of the Psych residents where Im doing observership I heard that all of them had received the IVs after November. Psych mostly starts sending IVs in November (Mid to End). So Even if you have not go any, you still might get later.
Best of luck to everyone

I had my IV in Staten Island, Psych interviews are so relaxed and they want to see a mature personality that is not too anxious and low self-esteemed. I am an anxious person sometimes, but I started to work on my thoughts for a while and try to put it in my head that If U believe You Are A Good candidate and can Be a Good Psychiatris, They Will see It, so be yourself!! show nice and humble but strong personality. I had great conversation with the attendings, they were super friendly, at the end of long conversation we talked about other things like interesting books and movies. One of the attendings realized I like psych related movies and introduced me a great movie (based on Novel): I never promised you a rose garden. I actually came home and ordered it, should be amazing. Guys, enjoy the journey, if you have good personality they are not blind and will see. Jyst dont be a zombie, overwhelemd by lots of BS's that people have told to scare you. Lucky you, psych IVs are not like military Ivs (like internal meds). I had heard it before and I experienced it myself. Just be put your mind together what you really wanna say, something that comes out of your thoughts, shows who U really are.

got an IV invitation last night (uni of iowa) and one today (st mary hospital in michigan). at 5 psych IVs now (and 1 FM but who cares about that, FM is boring as sh!t)

desperate to hear back from NY though, if i could get a uni program in NY that'd be awesome.

anyways, my next IV is dec9 in cleveland at case and that is supposed to be a really good program so just prepping for that.

had my IV at Kansas uni 2-3 weeks ago, that program was REALLY good... but its in the middle of nowhere, still a strong contender on my rank list though.

anyways, the fact that i got 2 IVs in the past 24hrs show that there's still hope, i heard IMGs get IVs november onwards anyway so worry not nerds.

Why is the psychiatry thread not as active as the other threads?
I thought this is a big specialty and lots of people go there

I agree!!!

Either people are not applying to it or they are and just not posting.

It would be helpful if people did post. Believe me if my husband did get IVs I would post but he didn't... so.....

Good Luck and happy holidays!!!

The last but not least update for you: I got matched! )))
Yes I did it! Scored 198 on CK-217:Step1, CS first attempt, no step3, publications in different field (than the field I applied to), 13 years from grasuation, IMG with no permanent residency permit!!!
Dont listen to those who discourage you!
Just find a way to do it, it is not easy at all, but possible!
Best of luck to U all

Default About Psychiatry Residency Chances

Hi!,

I am a IMG who wants to apply to Psychiatry this year. Reading this forum I found that I am in the same boat as your Husband did.

I wonder: Did he finally get residency? (considering 2 attempts in step 2 CS)

Thank you.

Default About Psychiatry Residency

Hi everybody,

I was reading your messages and I found those very helpful. I have a question: I am an IMG who wants to be Psychiatrist. I passed the Step 1 with a score of 229, but I failed my step 2 CS . I wonder how much it can impact my application. I did not take the step 2 CK, yet. Is it a big hit to fail the step 2 CS?.

My credentials are: MSc in epidemiology. Graduation year: 2012 In the case that I apply by next year (considering taking my time to take the step 2 CK and CS with good performance), Are there significant differences between applying this year vs next year?. Are there significant differences between a 2 years of graduation and 3 years of graduation?.

I do not if I can apply this year with pending results of the step 2 cs retaken.

Please, I need an advice.

Thank you.

Hi,

I am an IMG with the same goal: Get into Psychiatry.

I saw your credentials and I realized that I am in the same boat.

I wonder if you had interviews. What would you recommend me?

I sincerely need an advice.

Thank you in advance.

Default My list

You can check my list it has which hospitals according to my criteria seemed IMG friendly.
http://patriciaserranomd.wordpress.c...he-match-2014/
All hospitals post that they accept IMGs but I narrowed it down by looking at the residents and trying to find out how many were actually IMGs. I think if there arenīt any itīs cause the program isnīt really IMG friendly...

Hope it helps!

Default psychiatry clinical posting req..??

i am an IMG, doing my internship. My colg offers just 15 days clinical posting in psych during internship (though we have had 30 days clinical practise if you include last 4 years too)..
I wanted to know that how much clinical experience is required in psychiatry for USMLE? Is it 4 weeks or 15 days is fine too..??
And these 4 weeks do they need to be completed during your internship or is it collective of your total psychiatry clinical rotations during 5 n half years?
I have heard that the Universities in California have a mandatory thing needing 4 weeks in
psychiatry. Is it so? What about other places in USA..??

I tried to read your post multiple times to understand your purpose but unfortunately I couldn't reach any conclusion, do you mean certain requirements during medical school? if so I have not encountered such requirement before.
BTW did you finish your steps yet?

So Nitara ! i think I got what are you talking about. if not, i apologize. In case you are asking about USMLE exams or getting ecfmg certified , they do not have any req of 4 wks or more of USCE. (dont know about cali). But if you are inquiring about how many weeks of rotation required for getting into psych residnecy, it doesnt matter. They all know how the curriculums of imgs are like. what matters is psychiatry USCE. the more weeks you have , the better it is. thanks (do write if that doesnt answer you qs)
