Default What about SOAP?

Does anyone know how things work in SOAP?

I will really appreciate if someone can give a clue as to how things work in SOAP.
Looking ahead but I wouldn't want to end the fight without a fight to the last.

Thanks!

I wrote to my programs 2 weeks back. Got 17 more rejections since then either through ERAS or as direct reply to my mails.
I tried calling some of the rest but gave up after about 5 because I was getting voice-mail and hold time of over 10 minutes.

Do let us know if u hear from anyone out there.

Wow. Lost in translation I guess? I was posting to let people know that there are still interviews that will be sent out all through december. I wasnt trying to piss anyone off. If you feel that way then its your problem.

Forgive this minion!
I did not see your noble intent.

Thanks for the link. It was very informative but I couldn't understand everything because English is not my first language. I have mainly picked it up from Hollywood movies with captions.

Obviously, my lack of understanding and knowledge of the language is the cause of all my troubles this match season. I have been corrected so many times on this thread alone.
Of course, apart from the Red Flags on CV like YoG, lack of publications, no electives in US, no visa, etc.

But there is still light at the end of the tunnel (I hope I got that right.)
That's what you were trying to say, right?

Thumbs Up

So I've been the cynical one all along!
(Even though there are people here who seem enjoy getting on other people's nerves. )

This coming from an ex Chief Resident of a New York program who is still involved in the process as an attending:
There is a very real possibility to get IVs till 2nd week of Jan for prelim positions. Cat IVs could also miraculously show up.

So if you are not eligible for one of the score/ attempts/ YoG pre-filters, there is still light at the end of the tunnel for another month.

Default Update on SOAP

This is what I've been able to gather from NRMP so far:

SOAP is not specialty specific.
Can apply to programs that we didn't apply to during the match season.
Transmission of documents is through ERAS (Although I need to get more details about some specific requirements.)
It's FREE!

Still don't know how exactly people go about it but I'm on that.

Please add anything else anyone else knows.
The ones among us who are looking at SOAP as a possibility will really appreciate it.

How relevant is crossref?
Like compared to pubmed?

I just realized I have 13 publications in crossref

When you say feedback , you mean that they responded to your thank you note?

Sorry for the late reply. Yes, they responded to my email and actually said i Interviewed very well and will be happy to have me with them. Now, not sure if it was a generic email or personal. Unfortunately i dont have the contacts of the other interviewees. So fingers crossed.

Congrats!
So at least one spot has opened up for those of us who are desperately dependent on the match.

Its an extended prelim (1.5 y) - ( i actually start working next week ) an option to categorical depending on my performancewhixh i think is a fair chance, but im not worried, i know i will work hard)

Word of advice to all of you - when you rank your programs - pick the program where you feel they believe in you and support your.

Hey guys

Hope everyone's interview experiences have been good! How do you all feel about prelim spots? Most of the places I went to very rarely took a prelim on as categorical after a year and there's a lot of luck involved in getting a categorical spot elsewhere. Do you all think it's a risk worth taking?

I need help guys ..

I applied for general surgery and vascular Intergrated and I.M
I had one interview for vascular Intergrated at allegancy

Which is better, general surgery or vascular Intergrated?

If I matched in vascular, I will be vascular surgery certified only.

I need your advice guys

It really depends - if you've definitely decided that you want to practice as a vascular surgeon then obviously doing an integrated vascular residency will be advantageous. Unfortunately, your Step 1 score means it will be difficult for you to match into general surgery categorical. If anything you may be able to secure a prelim spot, but then that's associated with the massive headache of transitioning to categorical afterwards. If I were you, and I wanted to vascular, I would rank the integrated program at the top.

I had 4 cat. Interview + 6 prelim + 1 vascular ..
I want vascular surgery even if I matched in general surgery .
So, do you think which is better to rank high ,vascular or general surgery - Cat ?

Thanks again

Well if you want vascular surgery, it's a no-brainer- rank vascular higher!

Congrats to all you guys that made it thus far, and congrats to you Sadde on getting that prematch offer in CA.

If you guys could go back and redo it again, what would you have done differently, after taking Step 1. I'm currently 7 months away from being done with my core rotations and plan on taking CK at the end of this year.

My plan is the following:
- Do electives in areas that are prestigious (ie NIH, Emory)
- Do electives in community areas where I have a shot
- Apply broadly to as many programs as I can
- Get good LORs
- Do well on CK. My Step 1 score is a 229, so just one point cutoff for most programs, unfortunately.
- I'll find out this week if I'll be able to do research or not during 4th year.

But in the NRMP site i see all NY programs status as " active" .

I guess if it were ALL OUT the status should be "withdrawn" right?

Am i missing something

thank you. it is a gen surg cat spot. on nrmp, all out programs aren't even listed. If you want to find out which programs are all out, compare the programs list on eras to nrmp.

I think common sense dictates that doing a MEDICINE prelim year will most definitely NOT help you obtain a general surgery or ortho residency spot.

I wasn't sure where to post this issue, but it is related to what everyone above was discussing. My dilemma is which match to apply for. I graduate May 2015. The question is whether to apply for 2015 match or 2016 match. The issue is many, many programs list "ECFMG certificate" as a requirement to apply. This seems nuts to me because that means someone has to be AT LEAST 1 year out of school because if the match is in March, and you graduate in May/June how can you have your ECFM certificate ready the previous September for ERAS if you need your diploma to get the certificate?
What I'm asking is do programs that list this as a requirement also consider having all the exams for ECFMG certification and a graduation date before July 1, an equivalent to the actual piece of paper that says you are ECFM certified? I just don't want to apply the fall before I graduate and basically be thrown out of PD's searches based on the fact that my ECFM certification is "pending" because I haven't yet graduated (neither has all of the US students who apply each fall in their 4th year).
Maybe some of the IMG's who applied DURING their final year can say whether they ran into this issue? Did anyone find they lost out on interviews because their ECFMG certificate was pending?

Go for 2015. There will be hardly a program you will be ineligible for if you don't have visa issues.
Talk to ECFMG, they are very clear about provisions for Seniors (vs Graduates). After that if you still have doubts, you can still call programs.
Concentrate on getting good scores.

Good luck!

Just so you know, my brother matched last year and I have lots of info to give. I have received one rejection so far (Univ of Chicago), and have applied to 59 programs.

But apparently, according to Saade, there are set conditions that we need to meet before being able to join. This is BS. This forum is designed to be for everyone, and Saade, you do not get to decide who goes on the list, even if you created it. I am creating my own one if that is the case.

PS: if you wonder why I only applied to 59 schools, is because I know exactly which takes IMG, and which doesn't.

Whoever wants the list, PM me
Can you please send me the list of these IMG friendly 59 programs on my email address sohaibmohammad@gmail.com
I will be really really grateful for the favor.
Thanks. And I hope you matched last year.

Basically 99.999% sure you will match With marks like that, you will easily match in university categorical surgical programs. You can even match into tough specialities like ortho and plastics, even neuro.
Good luck and congrats in advance, let us know how things go.
Take care,
