categorical is tuff without contacts and research but prelim to general possible easily but dont rank high universities as they have many empty prelim surgery spots but they wont take you for categorical next year . rank small community hospitals that take low scoring amgs , impress them with your work in prelim becoz out of 4-5 prelims only 1 or 2 get extended , so it depends on your hard work and contact making skill during prelim and some luck . but its doable . good luck

Thanks for the input.
If the attendings do give me some LoRs, is it likely to help?

lors would be the basic requirement for the application but it would be more imp if they can make any calls for you and get you a IV . other part is that usce attending which are not responsive may give you satisfactory lors but you need very strong lors ,

my senior with 233 and 240 , canadian citizen , 8 months of observership cum research in usa , 1 publication matched only into prelim but has got it extended to next year . you have better scores but his attending backed him alot for IVs , you need someone like that . find some research and get in , even if this year does not go well it will make u a strong candidate next year

good luck

Thank you so much.

So is it not an absolute necessity to submit LoRs with the application?

Another doubt:

Do we have to apply separately for Prelim and Categorical for same program?

If I apply for categorical can I still be offered a prelim position?

no no , lors are an absolute requirement , no one will call you if a usa doc cannot support you. and yes you need to apply separately for them .

Question

Hello,

I am Canadian medical student planning to apply for both categorical and preliminary surgery positions. I would like to know what you guys think – should I apply now or wait until next year? I know my chances for a categorical position are slim, however, it won't hurt to try. I am interested in completing a 1 year surgical pre-lim as I think ,when I apply for a PGY-2 position, the 1 year + 1 month USCE + research + good scores + US LORs will help make me a more well rounded candidate for categorical. Thanks.

- 257(1)/254(2)/CS(1)/June 2014/No USCE/J1
- Will have a 1 month US surgical elective in march 2014 (so unfortunately, it won't count for this match)
- Will have at least 2 co-authored publications by the end of the year (again not sure if this will count) + some editorial stuff I did for a medical journal.
- I have LORs from Canadian doctors as well as Canadian clinical experience (I attend a non-LCME school)

Default Update

2 of my waived LoRs have been uploaded by US Surgeons.
I added my Dean's Letter as 3rd LoR.

Now I'm confused which programs to apply to because I need visa.

I am a UK grad, applying for both categorical and prelim General Surgery programs.

Here are my credentials:

239(1) / 250(1) / CS(1) / 2012 / 2 months USCE / visa needed

4 LoRs (2 from the attendings I worked with during my USCE, 2 from faculty members from my home institution in the UK (one of whom is the Chair of Surgery) -all waived)

7 peer-reviewed publications (all with Pubmed IDs - although most of these are not in high impact-factor journals!)
9 presentations (mostly at conferences in the UK - 2 at international conferences in Europe)

Keeping my fingers crossed!

How do one know about the rejection? I haven't seen anything in my message center so far. However, some programs haven't retrieve my docs yet. What is the meaning of that?

They are very impolite (If I may say). Although, is strange, you know... They have people from Honduras, China and D.R in their program.

The only thing I would like to put more emphasis on is: WTF with the rejection letter???!!!

I got rejection from Carilion too.
What is strange is that they say all their positions are reserved and their waiting list is filled too...
Then what are they doing with both their tracks active on ERAS? Wasting our money?

I'm just really angry

So 3 programs retrieved my application on Saturday. That makes it about 50% applications retrieved.

If any of my attendings are ready to make a call to any programs. what info should I give them?

Hopefully Monday brings some better news and interviews.

I saw the thread and suddenly I am more depressed because my mailbox is not giving me any news at all.
Yikes! I used to wonder what would be so stressful about the match and I know it now.

Another quiet day at the Inbox! Only 13 more programs left to download application but no news.

So frustrating!

Hi,
Best of luck to you too.

Any idea if any programs are offering pre-match this year at all? How does one find these programs?

No official pre-match this year. If you hear about any opportunity... Must be under the table.

I recently have one LoR uploaded into the post office: Should I contact the programs that haven't retrieve it yet?

You should if you have assigned it to them.

BTW anyone here get a California Letter? I haven't applied to California programs because of that but I want to know how much time it will take. If it can be done before application deadlines, I can apply to 2-3 more programs.

Thanks.

A whole week with just the rotten mail from Carilion Clinic staring back at me...
It's so depressing.
Is anyone getting anything in GS?

Same here... I'm trying to forget about this and pretend it is not happening. I'm clearing up my mind... Staring at the mailbox is not a healthy thing to do. Like in chess, I have already made my move. There is nothing else I can do right now, but wait.

Me too , just got the email. I guess it is a mass email.
But is it even legal that they have reserved the spaces they have but meanwhile they re participating in the match. Isnt this against the match principles??

Funny thing... I called them before applying and they didn't mention anything about their spaces being already filled, a pre selection, or anything.... Is that even legal?

It feels like programs are doing prematches. We should complain, so unfair for imgs.

Had the same thought.
My friend in Vanderbilt said that they know their Neurology residents till 2018 so don't take it personally if they send you a rejection in surgery as well!...

They should all be sued for the money and for mental agony. I'm sure we'll recover something.

Hey DocSikorski! Nice to see you here old mate

yeah, I did not find my 26 dollars on the road that I spend on sending my stuff to that stupid Carilion clinic!
Sh*theads!

Anyway, I believe that we should be getting interviews after AMG's, espicially those who go to the same university school and than apply to the same university programs.

I spend all of my money on programs last night - came home from work to celebrate my certification, wanted to buy my gf a drink and realized - I am outta monay!

I guess I am on can food diet now.
So carilion clinic, thats totally fine that you already have all of your spots given away - I am not even mad at all...

OK. I didn't apply there. Ran out of money before that.

All the mad guys above: Hey people! Don't get hypertensive because it's their loss not ours. Imagine if we matched to any of these rotten programs, the working conditions wouldn't be much better either. So let's take it as sign that we are destined for better things..

I either believe that or I'm deluding to keep myself sane till I get any response in my Inbox.

Anyways I couldn't help shooting off a sarcastic rotten mail to Carilion Clinic. Two days later there was some activity in my ADTS. They retrieved my USMLE transcript again but nothing else happened.
Except, of course, the satisfaction of letting it out at the right place.

Yeah sure, the garden fence in my new place is finally up. Now I don't have to stand guard because it's safe for my dog to go out.
There you see, some thing is happening right after all in my life...

If we guys get IVs, are we going to go in as psychos? Coz the longer it takes, the more mentally unstable I'm getting.

All tracks that any program had to offer.
Frankly, after reading up here I would have been crazy to apply to only Cat positions with my credentials.

How about you?

Frankly, after reading up here I would have been crazy to apply to only Cat positions with my credentials.

How about you?

I made the mistake of applying the Categorical slots unless in those programs where they specifically stated categorical and preliminary (eg John Hopkins) in which i applied for both. Is there a way I can go back to add the prelim? meanwhile i thought the Prelim advertised on the eras page were for the designated and so applicants are obliged to indicate what they PGY 2 specialty will be, no?

Been told that for IMG's we should expect t be contacted at the end of October for the interviews, that for us (IMGs) would start in November. That is only regarding surgery.

So chillax mates,
Back to beer - I am going to set up a micro brewery while going through all of this matching process

?Go to programs applied to link in programs tab on ERAS, then click individual programs and add your prelim track. I just wrote Gen Surgery in the PGY2 space.
