I take that back. 2 rejections from IM - prelim and categorical. I'd rather have silence.

I got one prelim rejection too. This one was much friendlier in tone.

Reject 1:
"I wish you luck elsewhere."
^isn't this a bit awkward?

In contrast:
Reject 2: "We wish you the very best of luck in your future endeavors."
^I think this is much more decent.

Idea!

1. I noticed two programs (originally retrieved app on 09.15), retrieved app again today, what does this mean, anyone?
2. One program in NC IM prelim still did not retrieve app, how?
3. Did anyone write follow up email to most wanted program, sorta show your interest in program, I heard AMGs do that..

It was rather late with this one, wasn't it? They probably abuse their staff - make them stay in late. Not too bothered in that case.

I got an email from Kaplan saying you should write one around 3-4 weeks after applying. Still less than 2 weeks for me.

1. They probably refreshed/updated everything before they actually started looking at stuff
2. IDK
3. I don't think it would help you in any way. It can backfire as much as it could help. Just imagine, if the program is popular, they receive dozens of similar emails. I would only consider writing to those programs that you had some kind of a contact with before the match started. For example I've sent emails to 30 programs in June inquiring. Only a couple replied. I would only write those...

No surprises here either. No IMGs in this program, I only applied because it's nearby.

I was thinking about this. I think in cases where some extra information is necessary that is not really covered in the application itself (e.g. CME credits for Illinois), writing to the program explaining/updating them could help. Just my 2 cents.

That definitely sounds reasonable. I would just go ahead and write to programs I'm really interested in even if I do not have extra information. I don't think it could hurt the application. If they do indeed take the time to read it, it could prove to be advantageous.

I have a question. So an IM prelim program invited me and gave me 10 dates to choose from. I replied back asking if there was a deadline by which I must choose the date. That was on Friday. No reply so far. There is no number listed on their website that I could call either. Do you recommend I just bite the bullet and choose a random date? Or should I wait for their reply?

I'm hoping to wait for more interviews from that city and only then book my tickets.

Any suggestions?

I have divided my trip in two blocks - north and south, I will be driving and taking haults at my relatives' places...but no matter how much u plan, u have to bite the bullet and start taking dates..i have taken dates for all the three IVs I got...atleast I got the dates of my choice...the programs are very generous ...they give 10 dates in option....I was impressed!!!

Thanks Roy. My situation is different from yours though. I'm based in the midwest and currently involved in research from which I can't take too many days off. But I endorse your plan. It sounds well thought out and very doable.
Good luck with the IVs.

Same with me. Although my boss is very understanding, so I can work weekends to compensate for the iv days. Which I mostly do anyway...these papers aren't gonna publish themselves

Same here. Mine is volunteer research, so I doubt they'll be too bothered. But
I want to make a good impression, so prefer working most days of the week. Ideally take only one off if I have to.

I envy you all that you are doing a research..i always wanted to do a research here...and now although I have time I will be complicating my chances for residency by doing haphazard activities....btw...you guys rock...this forum has been a real morale booster....

best of luck for tomorrow...

would you mind sharing which programs, and are these advanced, prelim or categorical?

That is awesome!! Congratulations! I would be ecstatic if that happened to me. Anyway, I'm quite happy with my day. 1 invitation and 'rejected for now but application on file' at another. IV count hits 3!

You must have a difficult name The majority of my invitations came outside the ERAS mailing system, so that isn't unusual.

About 1/2 of mine came directly to my email, I actually like it better because I can respond directly. When you respond just point out your name was spelled wrong and ask if they could correct it.

Thank you guys! That's reassuring. I already responded without correcting my name. Hope it was just a typo. I'm super stoked because I scheduled 2 IVs back to back in a week in neighboring states and I can save massive moolah just travelling by bus.

I think it means they might consider us in case someone cancels their IV, which is quite likely with AMGs. I talked to a guy who got a similar email last year from a different place and they finally invited him in Jan at VERY short notice.

Anyway, I wrote to the program asking them to elaborate.

It's gotta be some really "elite" place if they are so secretive about it Lol.
So who am I gonna meet tomorrow at Wayne State?

I don't think so. I have no adult neuro iv from these places either...

Got rejection from CC too. Kinda surprised me, because AFAIK they take IMGs.

Got 1 from NJ too. Keep it up guys.

Had my first iv. today at Wayne State. Very nice program, good atmosphere, nice people, good neurologists. I think the place is really understated

The MLEresidency tips site is nice. You can prepare for a list of questions they have. Don't overdo it though, keep it natural. The good thing about not having research is that you don't have to prepare that much. It took me a weekend to go through and reread all my papers.

They want to see your personality, how you interact, etc. You can't really prepare for these things.

I think the real question is - How's Detroit? Lots of news going around about the city being bankrupt and crime.

The city is raising from the dead. Crime is declining (there still are some rough places, but you can avoid them), and there are lots of suburbs, which are not affected by the city's bankruptcy. The media is years behind on the topic...

Sounds like a decent place to be. Remember New Orleans raising from the dead a few years ago. Of course, nothing compares to Nawlins though.

Nope, not really It was more about my future plans and my clinical experience (stuff that might be less clear when you look at a CV with research covering 1 full page).

I don't know what to answer to "what is the future plan" question! I'm fixated on match2014, not thinking past that!

That's not surprising. They aren't too IMG friendly.

You should call programs I think. Some say on their webpage that they take "transfer people." Beyond that I don't think that anyone will be able to provide you info here. You are 1 step ahead of us.

Default Introduction!

Hi guys,

My first post! You guys seem really kind--I've been inspired to join you.

255(1)/256(1)/CS(1)/2012(Europe)/No USCE but 2 months Canadian electives (ICU and resp) and lots of neuro observerships over the years/J1 needed. Very little research except for undergrad thesis in neuroscience which has been postered a few times since my graduation.

I applied late (Oct 4th) due to LOR catastrophe and my MSPE only came out last week. I applied to over 90 programs in neuro and a bunch for prelim too.

I've done alright so far with 11 invites from neuro (10 scheduled, one i just can't make it to), but nothing but rejections from prelim.

For some reason I am stressed today with the silence plus 2 rejections (prelim and Georgetown's neuro). Don't have anyone else to compare too! Hoping for some internetz support.

Welcome Cheshire, impressive scores! Don't worry about the prelims. I don't think any of us has too many of those yet. They probably go thru the prelim apps later, while the categorical i.m. people enjoy priority (just a hypothesis).

Thus far, I have 7 adult neuro invites, 3 pediatric neuro, 1 prelim peds, and now 1 prelim medicine.

Our credentials are quite similar, although I'm an older grad, but with a ton of research (just submitted my 11th to be full paper) and I don't need visa.

Requiring visa is a drawback, but USCE and being a fresh grad are definite advantages. My feeling is that these latter two are even more important for prelim medicine progs (since they are the people, who put you in action first), while I doubt prelims care about research at all...

Here's a mind experiment:
Disregard the invitation/rejection record of the first two weeks (for people with a LOT of invitations within this timeframe), as it is likely being biased towards invites.
Based on the past two weeks invite record, I had about a 1 invite to 2 rejection ratio. As an effort to adjust for possible future bias towards rejections let's count with 2 invites for 5 rejections.

Correspondance rate is about 40-45%. I applied to 140, thus I'm very likely to get a response from 56, therefore, 36 more responses are to be expected.

So I expect about 25 more rejections and 10 more invites. We'll see how this will hold up.

Default Hi!

Hi guys!
I've been following this thread for a few days now, so I finally decided to introduce myself.

240/263/CS(1)/2009/J1 needed/3 US LORs + 1 LOR from my home country.
I finished a 2-year research fellowship in Neuro at a top East Coast institution. I have 8 peer-reviewed papers (7 in Neuro; 6 as first author) + approx. 10 abstracts. I did one US clerkship during med school and a couple of Neuro observerships afterwards.

I need to match within a certain geographic area, so I only applied to 25 programs. So far, I have 3 interviews and 2 rejections (from Wake Forest and U of Michigan). I haven't heard back at all from the other programs.

I applied on Sept 25 because I didn't have my Step 2 CK score yet. It looks like this might have worked against me, but this seems to be a very competitive year as well . Anyway, let's hope we all get a few more invitations over the next couple of weeks.

Best of luck with everything, guys!

@d3r1d3x
Grats on your prelim interview! Can I ask where it's at? (Let me know if that's asking too much).

I wonder how my Canadian clinical experience translates for the American programs. I've never set foot in an American hospital before.

I like your mathematical musings! Where did you get the correspondence rate figure from? With 10 more interviews I would be golden and i think fairly sick of airplanes. Here's to hoping though.

@nachitoec
Those are sweet creds! By d3r1d3x's calculations you can expect a few more invites too.

Thank you Shini!

you guys rock!!! I applied very late to IM and Neuro. Some I applied Sep 15. Some I applied after my cs result oct 9, some applied after ECFMG certified oct 14. So far not to my expectation. 4 IV neuro 3 IV IM. I am very unorganized about this match and haven't applied to any prelim yet even though i got some Advance position interviews. Got about 8 Rejection overall. very few acknowledgements.

Any advice would be appreciated

Oh I forgot to tell you my stats

2011 grad, US citizen, step 1 265(1), 2ck 272(1), 2cs (1), no USCE, research off and on in molecular genetic for 2 years, 1 publication 1 pending (not neuro).

@nachitoec
Those are sweet creds! By d3r1d3x's calculations you can expect a few more invites too.

Thank you Shini!
The correspondance rate info came from the MLE Residency tips site (that guy is the most reliable source of USMLE/MATCH info...I cross-checked most of his statements, and the NRMP statistics always corroborated his them. ALWAYS).

So this guy plotted his rejections by month and the rejections showed normal distribution peaking in November (pretty funny). He also stated that most of his invites came in November too. Although he applied to I.M. so the dynamics might be different with neuro, but because of the normal distribution, I assume it's somewhat generalizable.

Mint, those are one of the highest scores I've seen, congrats! I think waiting for the ECFMG certificate was a good idea, so places requiring ECFMG certification for the invite wouldn't reject you right away. (Just image how easy it is for them to hit the reject button when they see an incomplete application).

What you can do at the moment is go to MyERAS and check the preliminary checkbox for the I.M. programs you've applied to. That will save you money and time as well.

So I expect about 25 more rejections and 10 more invites. We'll see how this will hold up.
This is a bit of a revelation for me. So, more than half the programs don't even respond to tell you you've been rejected?!

I was quite pleased with 4 invites from 10% responses so far.

Some program's described that they perceive Canadian clinical experience as USCE. Although University of Michigan obviously don't care They really infuriated me with the "good luck elsewhere" line. All the other rejections were kind and/or professional, but I perceived this as an unnecessary jab.

Yupp. More than half of the programs don't give you any decision. With 4 invites at this moment, I would expect you to get 4 more. You'll most likely match.

I hope this is just a lack of insight on how that phrase could be perceived. Try and read it as "good luck" rather than a tongue and cheek dismissal. They have regular old humans writing these things, afterall.

I think it's more of a Freudian slip.

Lol they don't know good creds when they see them. I'm saying that about any program that rejects me. I'm like Rochester? Are you kidding? It's a neuro-backwater!

Fingers crossed! I hope those 4 are from neuro. Just have 2 from neuro so far. LSU rejected me today.

Dunno guys. The south is really not my thing. I tried to avoid most of those states..

My balance for the today and yesterday night:

2 correspondances: adult neuro
1 semi-rejection (hold): prelim
1 invite: prelim
1 reject: adult neuro...cali...I ended up not doing the PTAL, so this is just a reminder of my selective laziness.
