Info Post IV letter

since we discussed about post IV letters here is a video (@01:10ish),
PDs prefer hand written notes! Check it out:

I watched the whole video. They don't really say too many new things, but what they say really emphasizes how vulnerable a position applicants are during the Match. PDs also say in this video that they don't really care about thank you mail. It's just that everybody likes hand-written fan mail.

I said it….based on 2 year old data. What has changed last/this year is that they pushed the Dean's Letter/MSPE-s to October instead of the original November date. At least I cannot come up with any other explanation.

Rejections on Thanksgiving day=> megarude.

At this point I think, what we have is what we'll have.
Good luck, everyone. Enjoy the weekend.

Hi guys, I never actually wrote in this forum before, but I have been following it for a while. I just couldn't keep silent after the post above: as a matter of fact all my interviews came in November

Good luck everyone!

Step1 is a bit low. Step 2 is average. Your competitiveness would depend on your year of graduation, and whether you did a US rotation during medschool.

Graduation will be this year, and yes all my rotations were in the US. I'm also a US citizen.

I've talked to a lot of people during my interviews and what almost everybody had in common was a U.S. rotation, so I guess that is the most important. You don't have to have crazy USMLE scores if you have that.

Based on this you'll get a decent number of interviews, but it depends how stiff next year's match will be...

I agree with all of you guys, but unlike many here I just have 6 IVs (3neuro cat and 3 IM), while I put my best for every interview, I just really hope I match, preferably for neuro of course but I just want to match at this stage. Anymore interviews are very very unlikely.

BTW, I met so many awesome people on my interviews. Neuro applicants are really great persons in general. I hope we will all be future colleagues.

Happy New Year everyone! Are you excited about ROL starting next week?! Is anyone planning to write a letter to a program of first choice? I heard it somewhere but not sure if my letter will even change program's ROL!
All the best!! I really hope to match!

Do you know anybody who’s interviewing at Allegheny Pittsburgh on the 5th of February? One of my friends is trying to switch dates for the 12th.

It depends on your preferences.

If u want urban=> Drexel.
If you want neat => UConn.

Don't know about Drexel, but if you're into stroke, UConn is very good.
I liked the people there, and the atmosphere as well. The residents were pretty nice too, so it's definitely not a bad choice. The salary was pretty competitive there as well, and New England is beautiful.

I'm more of an urban guy though with a very peculiar taste in concerts, which requires a big city. Otherwise I would roll with the calmer place.

Default ROL

Heya guys--just checking in. This ROL is so difficult. I'm always stuck between places with the big name (for FMG-friendly programs) and all the high tech (bells and whistles programs) versus places that I really connected with that have great people and great locations, but less of a name, or smaller departments. If anyone wants to share thoughts (perhaps more privately, if you want) and notes on programs, I would be very eager!

What do you think is the most important when determining "the quality of training" you will receive? Here, I mean comprehensive clinical neurology which will give you access to research and career advancement. Some suggestions:
- Subspecialty coverage and depth (eg. epilepsy: presence of epilepsy docs, presence of EMU; Neurocritical Care: presence of fellowship trained NCC docs, presence of closed N.ICU run by neurologists; etc)
- Rankings on US News or elsewhere for neurology (unlikely!)
- impressiveness of fellowships won by previous residents
- general feeling you got when talking to residents and faculty
- teaching -- how can you assess this?

Any musings would be appreciated!

Also I second the previously mentioned post that neurology applicants were mega-cool this year. I met so many people I would just love to work with. Who know--maybe I met some of you!

-Cheshire

It's not that complicated.

Look at fellowship placements=> tells you your academic opportunities after residency. Fellowships are not too competitive in neurology, so most places will get you a fellowship at a place of your first or second choice.

Look at the subspecialties the program has=> if they have a little bit of everything, your training will be excellent. ACGME standardizes training so much, if a program is accredited, it will provide you a decent training. So I wouldn't worry about this factor.

If you have limited options, make sure the place has the subspecialties you are interested in, and they placed people into nice fellowships in this/these subspecialty(ies).

Research funding=> it's only meaningful if you want to stay at the place after your training and want to start networking during your training. The research you'll have time for does not really require the kind of funding basic research does.

US News ranking is mostly meaningless=> it handles neurosurgery and neurology scores together. An excellent neurosurgery can give a falsely positive impression on neurology and vice versa.

The rest of the decision should be based on your personal priorities.

Question

Hey everyone,

Been a while since I posted here. Hope you all had a great interview season and have a potentially excellent match.

I have most of my ROL figured out, but am struggling with UTHSC, Memphis. I feel like it could be a good program that provides top notch training, but the city didn't appeal to me. Do you guys know anything about the program? In particular, the quality of didactics.

I've also heard the workload there is difficult to manage, but am willing to look past that.

Also want to echo what you all are saying about this year's fellow interviewees. I enjoyed meeting everyone and made some friends in the process!

Yes, all the best, Neuro applicants! Hopefully we get to meet each other one day in a conference or something.

About ROL, just sharing... my top criteria are:
Location (urban/accessible),
Prestige (same note as fellowship placements)
Gut feeling (first two plus the feel with residents/faculty)

Regarding hardships, if ever there's something hinting about difficult workload in a particular program that meets those 3 criteria, (meaning WORTH IT) I just tell myself that it won't be forever. It may be 3 or 4 years, but it ain't forever. Someday we will look back at that. Hopefully that keeps me afloat

All the best!

Last minute ROL question again...

UToledo vs Allegheny Pittsburgh?

UToledo seems to have better fellowship placements though... but Pittsburgh is a nice city. Any inputs about them both, keeping location aside?

Default AGH

I don't know too much about Toledo but I did interview at AGH.

I can give you pros and cons about AGH, which I'm sure you already know, but here goes:

Neutral:
-4 months true electives, 6 months selectives over the whole 3 yrs
-24 hr call system but I hear you sleep 3-4 hours per night!
-4 residents/yr (recent change)

Pros:
- pretty stable department with people (including the PC) who have been there for a decade+; The residents were an interesting mix of Pittsburghers and FMGs.
- Neat lady in movement disorders (Dr. Baser)
- Pittsburgh is a cool city, and it's not too much in terms of cost of living
- You get to do child neuro at a UPMC hospital (kinda neat)
- High ranking hospital for neuro by US News (take from this what you will)
- Automatic prelim through advanced link -- looks pretty nice. they have a 4 week/1 week inpt/outpt schedule all year so you can recooperate from wards.
- Pretty good subspecialty coverage, lacking people in headache, behavior, sleep, and neuro-onco (i think), with non neuro people for endovascular/interventional and N.ICU.

Cons:
- Recent failure on the boards by at least 1 resident (now board pass rate is 87%)
- Fairly unkind vacation schedule (15 days, no sick days, no education days, no personal days, no other types of leave)
- Not affiliated with a university (low amounts of research, no NIH funding, no staff for webpage design/office improvement. The department has to fight for itself sometimes.)
- Old building with some heating problems (but pretty and historical!)
- Currently does not use complete EMR--uses paper on inpts and EMR in outpatients I believe.

I hope this is somewhat useful. For programs I couldn't pick between I just make pros and cons lists for each place and then sort of compared them.

Good luck guys! I really mean it--I can't wait to work with you!!!!!!

From this point on, we have no control over the events.
Quite a pacifying feeling, right?

Good luck everybody!

Halfway--need to find a prelim!

Went risky and ranked an advanced that i loved with a short prelim list over categoricals that were pretty good. Entering SOAP now. One interview so far.

Congratulations you two! Already had one phone interview and it went well! I'm not too stressed but I'm not looking forward to another week of interviews :P

The advanced program gave me a "near guarantee" for the IM spot. Lesson learned: Near guarantee means not a guarantee at all.

At least I think I know where I've matched to. I think.

Well, that's that. No prelim from the SOAP (2 interviews, no offers).

My advanced position *may* be able to find something for me. I am trying to come up with a plan B. Anyone?

Also, best of luck to everyone tomorrow. I hope you all got your favorite places.

That's a nightmare, but hopefully the program you matched to will help you with the prelim. As far as I understand they can if they want to...

I think it depends on the relationship between the individual departments. No matter how you swing it, IM is a different department and they didn't match me. At least neuro is trying.

Any other ideas as to how post-SOAP job searching goes? Resources?

Programm filling stats are planned to be published on March 24th, but if you're 100% sure about which program you matched to, you should contact them ASAP.

BTW, this is a good indicator that the SOAP is a joke fore IMGs.

Oh yeah. I think they just throw out all the IMG applications as soon as they get them. And yeah, I am pretty sure which one it is. I contacted them on Monday.

I have a gut feeling that your advanced program will manage prelim for you! They can't miss good candidate and their spot would become empty if they don't accommodate you with prelim IM!
my best wishes!

I agree with Gulf. You are a fresh grad with very good scores and already matched partially, you're a really good applicant that would be foolish to miss.

One tip about post-SOAP search - Email programs, and if filled, ask if they can keep your application on hold in case of an opening.

And as mentioned by others already, contact your advanced program immediately!

Best of luck.

#1 Neuro, #2 Prelim over here. Statistically, this was a very unlikely scenario.

Any news Cheshire?

Congratulations guys! You've all done really well (those that have posted).

Thanks for your concern guys.

Yeah, I'm still in the same situation. I matched to my #1 program as suspected and they are trying to organize a position for me. However, that is still up in the air and will continue to be for at least another week. There's really nothing else out there in terms of plan B's--one prelim program left from NRMP which only goes to voicemail when you call them. I don't know how to access a list of non-NRMP positions. I know about FindaResident but think that is really unlikely to bear fruit (they say they get most of their position postings in August).

Basically I am just sitting and waiting and the stress levels are high. My family looks worse off than me at the moment though; somehow I am behaving somewhat calmly. I don't see a point in regretting my decision to gamble with the rank list--what is done it done.

That being said, I have no one providing strategy or advice (no dean's office to help) and other than some snippets of info I can glean from the internet I feel totally uneducated as to how to proceed. I just have to be brave and wait it out for a week I guess.

I feel for you! I did the same thing. I only ranked one advanced program in my top 10, and took the exact same risk by placing them as #1, thinking that they won't take me. I'm sure that things will work out for you. Be strong!

Default Good news

Hi everyone,

Thanks for your concern and support over all these months, and especially the last several. It has been a very long, uncertain and stressful road. While everyone else was celebrating the rewards of all their work, their exams, apps, and interviews, I was stuck in limbo, not knowing if I would have to repeat my match year. My neurology advanced program that I matched to in March fought hard for me. It took them a long time and they couldn't really keep me updated until the papers were all signed from on high--but I have finally received great news!

I will be starting my IM prelim at the same institution as my advanced program come June. This is only a month away and I have all the paperwork to get done before I start! Its kind of a logistics nightmare and I will be paying a lot of couriers, but I am on cloud 9.

I hope others can learn from my experience of ranking an advanced program #1 when your prelim list is short--don't do it! It's not worth the stress (my mom looked like she was going to have a stroke during SOAP week). I think I lucked out because my program director is truly amazing--that was one of the main positives that the residents kept saying about him, and it turned out to be true for me too. I think even if it looks like a nearly sure thing (my program director called me before the ROL was due and told me the prelim year was going to be easy...nearly guaranteed!), 95% chance is still a 5% chance you won't match to a prelim and will have to start over again. It's not worth it, even though for me, in the end, I landed my dream job.

Thank you again for all your positivity! I hope we run into each other one day, now that we are colleagues. And those that are still waiting to match--keep trucking!

YEAH!
I'm very very happy for you! Honestly, I started losing hope, so this is just the best news we could have gotten! Congrats!
