260(1)/252(1)/Pass(1)/2010(Europe)/clinical research in a US university since 2011/No visa needed.

Side notes:
- enrolled in a PhD program at my original med school w/ anticipated grad in spring 2014.
- currently 7 publications in pubmed (will be >10 by end of the year), all in neuro.
- >6 poster presentations.
- participated in weekly neurological conferences at the hospital but no direct observership done yet (planning to shadow with some of the physicians I'm collaborating with)
- US. LORs: didn't start asking but I work with 2 clinical and 1 research neurologists, and also with a neuroradiologist and a neurosurgeon.

I don't think shadowing would really improve my application. Maybe doing some volunteership would help more. What do you think?
I work full-time anyway, and been tired of prepping for USMLE being my "second job", so I don't want to overdo any of the above.

I don't think you'd be "doomed", nowadays "hands-on clinical experience" seems to be valued much more than research. At least in a great proportion of popular neurology programs.

Haha. That doomed comment was tongue in cheek.

Besides, my clinical experience isn't ''hands on'' in neuro. Only one observership. My electives were in cards, hem onc, ortho and rads.

Not so sure about ''hands on USCE'' > research as well. Publications go a long way in neurology matching. As Sadde says, with your CV you're bound to match. Most likely at a great program! I would advise you not to waste time shadowing people in their clinics. Your abundant research experience more than compensates for any perceived lack of USCE.

215(1)/220(1)/CS(1)/2011/8 months Observership, 5 month research as research assistant (both done in a good Neuro University program) /H1

I am currently working as research assistant on full time basis on a big neurology/neurosurgery research paper studying a cohort of 47 patients who went through surgery in the past 12 years in this 15th ranked neurology program. Sadly, this university based program does not take FMGs. My scores are low so i am backing it up with a lot of academic activity.
I am submitting 2 case reports, 1 research Abstract , 2 review articles, 1 research manuscript all as first author in journals with >4 impact factor as first author. I have submitted most of these articles and I will submit some till August.
I will definitely get published for 3 of the above papers till September 15th.
I am also doing a poster for my research as first author in December.
I am aiming to take step 3 in december. I will have 3 LORs from neurology attendings and two from IM (for my prelim)
I have no idea about my chances, I am just working my a** off since more than a year to overcome my scores.

Step2 233 1st attempt
CS pass 1st attempt

YOG: May 2014

All USCE
US citizen

2 years US research with one first author publication.

Neuro is really my only choice so I'm praying I'm competitive enough to get a few interviews. There are a lot of amazing applicants here and I hope that there's enough spots for all of us.

I uploaded everything this morning and about 12 programs have downloaded the app so far in ADTS, I'm not sure what that means though. Best of luck everyone!!!

It's automated:

I applied at 23:53 and some programs retrieved my data at 00:09. No one is going to look at the applications at Sunday midnight.

About 27 advanced neuro on my side, 42 prelims. I went for prelims at the universities of the prelims, and programs with at least 8 prelim positions.

A question about the retrieval. Do programs always download everything, or do they stop if you get filtered out by the usmle score filters?

I read it at some forum that they download everything and filter afterwards, thus looking at the apps .

I received a message from Case Western:

"Your application has been received and has gone through the 1st review
process. The Review Committee will again be reviewing applications at a later
date and if you are chosen to interview, we will be in contact with you.
During this time of year, I receive more e-mails and phone calls that I can
keep up. I can assure you that after your documents go through the 2nd review
process I will be in touch with you. We wish you good luck during this match
season."

As far as I understand, the interview invitations go out to AMGs first, IMGs last. According to this, the peak month will be November for both invitations and rejections. Before then, it would be too early to draw any conclusions.

Stay strong, and keep busy!

It depends wether they have iv. dates free or not. Also, if your reason to change date is reasonable, they should accept it. If it's something like you couldn't get a cheaper ticket or something, then it's a different situation...

Smile Chill guys, we gonna do it!!!

215(1)/250(1)/CS(1)/218(1)/2012/noUSCE,but worked in hospital settings in US for a decade/UScitizen
working as research assistant at university hospital (Neurosciences).
Will have two publications by the end of the year.
I have unique personal story connected to Neurology, if I go through the filters then would definitely get IV. My step 1 and 3 suck big time!!!!
Applied very carefully, I'm also older and went to med school in Europe in my 30s
Not changing IV date, going to suck it up guys!

Question preliminaryIM

"your application to the Preliminary Internal Medicine Program
will only be considered if Neurology Program interviews you"

What is this mean? Am I supposed to email them once I get IV for advanced program?

If it is a decent program, this means they are likely to arrange it for you. IMHO. If not, you should call the prelim people about the issue. I have some prelim trouble myself. One program asked me wether I wanted to do a dual interview with prelim and neuro, then I realized that I haven't applied to the prelim of the place. (My fault). I'm gonna call the prelim administrator on the issue soon...

Info IV

But I didn't get IV for advanced program, I got for categorical. I think until I get invitation from advanced program I'm not supposed to contact them. However I did email them generally ("thanks for consideration and will let know once hear from neuro side" type of letter). I would LOVE to do IM preliminary year there, it is good university program.
I applied only to adult neuro (categorical and advanced) and few IM preliminary, no child neuro.

You can still apply to IM preliminary there, some programs still didn't retrieve applications, particularly IM preliminary that I applied.

Info

Palmetto Health is good, it is affiliated with University of SC (oldest largest state university). Located in Columbia,SC , the whole town is a campus. If you like to party and like noisy places or big city person, this is not for you. It is very quiet, small city, has old look and feel.
Program should be good, since south has lots of neuro patients, especially stroke (because of their southern diet) and large african-american population. You will learn a lot.
That's what I know about that place. I also applied there, but haven't heard from them.
To people with super high scores: Thank you for not applying there!!
Good job everybody, keep posted!!!!

Solid stats! We're in the same boat unless you have a lot of experience and publications.

Default No IVs yet, rejection from texas and pennsylv.

235,254,cs pass, step3 not yet, 3 months pure neurology electives including Neuro ICU at a university, 1 month cardiology elective, 2 US LoRs, No research; Visa - not needed

applied to 82 neuro; 45 Im prelims,

2 rejections and completely silent Inbox;

btw, I uploaded deans letter in place of MSPE; is it ok? ECFMG site mentions that for last 2 years MSPE term has replaced Deans letter, my deans letter does not mention my marks in my college; please comment!@!

Info Dean's Letter

It is used be Dean's Letter now it is called MSPE. MSPE has somewhat unified structure for all AMGs, and used by PDs extensively to see where applicants stand in the crowd. Therefore it is important document for AMGs. As for IMGs: International schools have no concept of MSPE, my school had no idea!!! I sent examples to my dean, but the result was nowhere near I wanted or examples I sent !!! PDs know this situation very well and mostly do not wait for MSPE for IMGs. So chill !!!
If any PD reads my "MSPE" "very nice student, attended all lectures... " imagine!

not counting, but for each advanced neuro applied to IM prelim+few more when noticed that there many IMGs in the program. total 140 programs, annoying to count how many of what program. It is already stressful!
All the Best Everybody! The next 2-3 weeks are high time, serious business!!!

I think the preliminary programs are going to be more limiting than the actual neuro programs. I've received plenty of interviews already, but none from prelim medicine. No matter how frustrating, this is still preseason until the (in my opinion, totally useless) MSPE-s become available, so none should draw any conclusions whatsoever. Look at it this way: at least those who applied a little late can catch up too, making the process a bit more fair.

Question IVs

237 (1) / 209 (1) / CS (1) / Step 3 not yet / 2008 / USCE one year / 2 oberverships / Lots of publications in Neurology and Neuroscience / No need for Visa

2 IVs, 10 rejections mostly Prelim...

I have stress AND lots of concern regarding my CK score... Am I matched? Do I have chance to get more IVs?

2 IVs in the first 12 business days is not bad at all. I had a friend who had 3 ivs in the entire season and got matched matched. Bring all your publications to your IV, be able to talk about any of them. Make an impression, and have a reasonable excuse for your CK score. That's all you can do. Since you have a decent Step 1 score, your excuse might be more believable, since Step 1 is the thougher exam (for most).

As a fresh grad I doubt you had too much chance to get into real research, and I think PDs are aware of that. It would be the icing on the cake to have som publications, but hey, it takes time to do decent research (and I'm not talking about getting your name on a paper but doing actual research work).

Awesome! Congrats! 6 IVs!!!! Amazing! I have 1 IV so far, haven't heard anything from NY,Boston, Chicago! This week is silent for me, no IV and no rejections!
You are right about preliminary programs, seems like it is harder to get in, I also got rejections mostly from preliminary programs last week.
I always thought (without any bases to do so) that it is easy to get into preliminary programs, I was wrong, I guess prelim. are in high demand among many specialities.

But I think the crux of the matter is , in neuro research matters more than USCE. I haven't even heard from the Program where I have spent 4 months, all residents know me, have a senior professors letter. Heartbroken.hehehhe

It's still really early, I think in the next week or two things should really pick up. As a courtesy, the place that you're currently at should extend an interview to you and I'm guessing in the next few weeks we'll all get many more.

I have a question,
What do you think, can we ask PC directly after getting IV if they offer pre-match.
if no then how can we have that information?

You are not supposed to ask that, because there is no pre-match anymore since the all-in rule is applied. Even if they have a shortcut for this, I don't think you should be the one, who brings it up directly.

Thanks!!
I have one more question.
Does anybody know if Univ of Tennessee is categorical or advanced program. I am so confused, when I was applying through ERAS it says it is categorical, but univ website, freida says it is 3 yr program. Its confusing me. I am posting the link of univ here.

http://www.uthsc.edu/neurology/education_training.php

Please help if you have any idea.

Categorical! ERAS is most updated! All neuro programs will say "3 year program" because residents actually start there on PGY2. PGY1 is IM. It is listed as categorical because they will provide PGY1 IM within the same university.

I second that. Also, they might have become a categorical program recently, and the website has not been updated to reflect the current status of the program.
