Default Hi everyone

Just thought we should all support each other

Hope everyone is doing well. I mostly got the same rejection and interview offers from the programs you guys have been posting. So everyone is in the same boat.

Let's all stay positive!

I'm starting to lose hope... No IVs at all and 74 programs haven't said a peep. Does EM just send silent rejections?

U of Maryland just sent out an email saying they are reviewing with intent to offer/reject over the weekend.

Not sure how many of you look at SDN, but there is an annual thread of offers that a LOT of people post on showing when they were offered IVs. This helps to interpret the mass emails. Of example, Orlando Health sent and email saying they were looking at apps, but already sent invites on 9/17 and 10/18, so it is hard to say how many more they will send. While no one has heard from U of Maryland, so they might be sending more.

Also, just my thoughts so far. I have several friends applying to EM and we all know each others applications, scores, etc. With this, we could see who had what weaknesses in their application and how many IVs they were offered. It seems that you needed scores above automatic screening, a complete app with 3-4 LORs (2 being SLORs) submitted early (9/15 best), and a little luck. I know some will disagree with the SLORs, but:

#1) most program sites state they require 1 and recommend 2, while others just requie 2

#2) one of my friends has almost the same scores, backgroud, school, and general app as I do, both submitted on 9/15. Difference: I had 2 SLORs posted early, he had one late and is still waiting on the 2nd. He has 1 offer to date.

Now this is just from my observation (n=5), but seems to be viable.

At the same time, I am not trying to be a Debbie Downer, and truly hope everyone the best. There is still time. Based on the SDN invite thread, there are 30-40 programs unaccounted for, and based on last years thread, a lot go out in Nov and some even in Dec/Jan.

I couldn't Agree more, SLOR is king then scores. Have a friend w similar scores only 1 SLOR he has 0 interviews so far.

Default Non us citizen img

I know you guys already know that I am non-US citizen OLD IMG. To find out my chance, I searched all available current EM residents' medical schools. I found out most non-us-citizen-looking IMGs from non-us, non-carribean medical schools are from Saudi Arabia or other mid-eastern-asian schools. I also found out that there is some kind of exchange program between those schools and US schools.

Is there anyone who are familiar to this program?
The statistics say that there were 33 non-us-citizen IMGs matched to EM last year. I thought it was OK, since it was more than zero. But, ever since I heard about the program and found out that most of the 33 were might come through the program, I am losing my hope...
What do you guys think about it?

It's difficult to get SLOEs when you have studied abroad and have overseas clinical experience... One letter may be obtainable, but 2 is more difficult.

I have one and still have no interview. Colleagues in a similar position have none and have no interviews. I don't feel much ahead.

I posted in the very beginning of this forum about the SLOR or Now SLOE. I only know what my good friend told me who was a pd and he specifically td me as img u have to have one SLOR minimum to get looked at. He also said the more the merrier w one caveat; make sure any additional SLORs are positive and the most important thing make sure the last check box were it says would you consider taking this student Into your residency program is checked off on yes. My understanding is matching into EM w out a SLOR is possible but not very likely. I agree w EM hopeful I think first the eras computer software filters u out just based on your scores. Once you make the cut then the number and quality of your SLORs get you interviews. I was told by my friend who is pd they don't even read your personal statement until before the interview but that it hardly factors into them offering you an interview.

W all that I do believe we are early in the season for EM and remember students especially amg's who took interviews may start canceling at certain places the are geographically uninteresting to them and some interviews may also open from them. The average amg EM applicant applied to 6 more programs this year than least because it's so competitive, but many will drop some of those extra interviews, so let's hope they come to us and we can get some more imgs into EM.

Default SLOEs

Yeah seems like those of us without SLOEs aren't getting any interviews... What I don't understand is why I haven't gotten more rejections then. My goal for next year will definitely be getting SLOEs.

Yeah I had the SLORs and have received some interviews, however I have only received several rejections as well. I think it's early In EM season for imgs I suspect we will start getting a ton more rejections. Hopefully with that we get some more interviews. Dr Laura, if you don't get EM interviews are u gonna soap or just try again next year for EM? I ask because I had a friend who didn't match me soaped into family, hates it and reapplying to EM this year and no one wants her because she used a year of funding already. She told me if I don't match me this year either prelim year or take off the year do research get SLORs and reapply. Something to think about, I'm still on the fence about it. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

I only applied to EM and prelim IM. If I don't get into either then I will focus on SLORs and step 3 for next year. I haven't even graduated yet so I have time. I graduate next year

Default About SLOE

Hi guys, I don't have SLOE and I have a few interviews too, I apply to >120 programs though. I think it's a case-by-case basis, it's not like if you have scores of 200 + 200 but 3 solid SLOE will definitely get you interviews or that 280+280 but no SLOE will get you no interview at all. But I agree that if I had gotten like 3 SLOEs, life would be much much easier. But just guys, don't lose hope!

Unhappy Only rejections :(

So far I have received emails with rejections and not a single IV.

Rejections from:
  • University of Arizona College of Medicine at South Campus Program
  • McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University Program
  • University of Illinois College of Medicine at Chicago Program
  • Louisiana State University (Shreveport) Program
  • Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center/Harvard Medical School Program
  • Boston University Medical Center Program
  • University of Maryland Program
  • Western Michigan University School of Medicine Program
  • University of Nebraska Medical Center Program
  • UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School Program
  • University Hospital/University of Cincinnati College of Medicine Program
  • Case Western Reserve University (MetroHealth) Program
  • University of Washington Program
  • Medical College of Wisconsin Affiliated Hospitals Program

I applied to 84 programs because I feel I am not the strongest applicant.
Step 1 and CK 212, CS pass, no USCE, need visa.
Only UK work experience in Emergency Medicine. There's no other speciality on my mind than EM....I hope a miracle happens

Yup Oregon shaft today. Preceded by LSU and Wisconsin yesterday
Seems like a lot of IMGs have similar rejections - I guess there's safety in numbers
Still waiting for the magical IV to come through. Didn't think life would be so stressful during this period!! Maybe will just have to wait for the scraps from the American students...

It's been quite. Just seeing if there are any updates. Seems only trickling rejections in the last 2 weeks. I would say the season is over, but if so why still send out rejections, so maybe there is a little time left.

If it's over, I'm offended! So many programs haven't answered me... You spend so much time, effort and money applying, the least they can do is reject you.

USCE?? For sure... Publish?? ok ok!!!…..High scorezzzz…fine!!!…but…..

did any EM hopefuls partake in any supplementary certifications to bolster and cushion their CV's beside USCE??? Especially give the recent competitive nature of EM...

Default Very Quiet

Hey everyone,

Been getting a lot of rejections recently. Not interview invitations for past 3 weeks. Got overall 3 interview invites. I would say they're probably very close to the end of the interview season.

Hope everyone is doing well here.

Hello! Can you mention where you got your rejections? I called a bunch of programs and was told that I'm waitlisted.

Many rejections in the past 3 weeks. Even if wait listed, it can still suck. Was called last week by a PD herself, said she liked my app and wanted to interview me, could I be there on their interview date in 2 days at a certain time. I said I was currently interviewing in the Midwest, but would see if I could adjust my flight home to make it. I called like 2 hours later and said the best I could do was 2 hours later than mentioned on the IV day. She said that would not work. No IV. Thought it was kinda odd to take the time to call to offer, then not accept a 2 hour tardy, especially given that I was given 2 days notice. This was also during all the storm delays, so I felt it was a huge effort to even be there at all, as I would have changed a flight, taken a bus for 300 miles, then drove overnight 7 hrs to get there. Sorry for the rant, just not happy how this went down.

Default Emergency Medicine

Good luck with interviews and the match!

I am an IMG R1 that matched in EM at a midwestern school last year. I love it!

I just wanted to share a website that has been helpful to me in my early residency. I couldn't figure out another place to put this.

epic-smart-phrases.com

Great resource for interns just starting out in EM.

Thanks and good luck!

Hey sounds like most of you have gotten at least 1 interview. It's been a tough run this year it seems. Season is nearly over, and I unfortunately got nothing. Very depressed about it all... Don't know if I will reapply next year if this year was so bad! Anyway, happy holidays to all, hope you can find the time to relax and enjoy a lil

Are you only interested in EM? Because your stats are pretty impressive. I hope you get something. Happy Holidays.

Default Need Advice

Dear Colleagues

I am a senior ED with more than 10 years experience in emergency medicine and major trauma in the United Kingdom; ALS, APLS, ATLS, TTM, TTL, etc, etc, ... qualified who is planning to move to States.

What is my chance to enter EM residency?

I really appreciate your opinions.

First off, I believe anything is possible. However things are more competitive then ever. For the best and most up to date stats on your chances visit the following link. It is the charting outcomes for IMG's that was just released.

Wish you the best of luck and hope this helps.

Default My 2014 EM Match Experience

Just wanted to say congrats to everyone who matched today and for anyone still waiting to hear, keep faith and no what the outcome do not give up on your dream. I met many applicants on the road this year who were IMG's who failed various steps and had many roadblocks, but many of them kept going and tried to do research or other activities and strengthened their cv's and matched the following year.

I found out today that I matched and I only applied to EM so I know that it the specialty I matched into. It's been a long hard road so far as an IMG, with lots of planning and hurdles to over come. Anything is truly possible. Wish everyone the best of luck.
