Question How important is USCE?

Hi there. First of all, I want to say how wonderful a forum this is. I'm a long time lurker, and first time poster today. And I thank all of you in advance for any help you might be able to give me.

Yeah...I've got another question that is probably also dumb.

I'm a Canadian (did my BSc at the University of Toronto, and ended up not going to medschool in the West for financial reasons).

Now I'm supposed to graduate in July from medschool here in Sudan, and I am getting ready to apply for the 2014 match. However, I have zero USCE. None. Nada. Right about the time I was supposed to do my electives, my mother was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma and I just spent all of my vacations at home with her instead.

My question is this: if I were to get a really good score (I'm talking 250+) on Steps 1 and 2CK, will that in anyway offset my lack of USCE and US LORs? In other words, is there a minimum score that I need to shoot for in order for this serious redflag not be so serious anymore on my application? Or should I just forget about applying this year and wait until I've gotten a couple of externships under my belt?

Yes. Definitely. Super high scores (250+) will for sure offset the need for USCE.

If you have high scores then you don't need to delay your application for another year.

It depends on where you are applying to. Super scores are good for programs that do not require USCE. Super scores don't mean jack for programs that require USCE, because you get filtered out. However if you have contacts in the program that requires USCE, or if you are somehow lucky, then good for you. I don't see how super scores can help with programs that specifically state that candidate MUST have Usce

Okay, thank you both for your insight. I really do appreciate it.

I randomly saw yesterday that exams taken after Jul 27 won't be released until Sept 25. I don't really want to apply late, ontop of having no USCE. That probably means I'm going to forgo this year's application, take my time with Step 1, and try for next year instead.

Lol, I wish I'd known sooner than I could have not gone to Atlanta for CS in the middle of my reading week for finals here in Sudan. Oh well, everything happens for a reason I guess.

Last question: does anybody know a good website/forum for the UK Residency programs? I've been looking everywhere and can't seem to find one.
