Warning! Need serious advice

Hello everyone I hope you are all doing great!

This year I didnt intend to apply, but after yesterday (Got accepted into an ophthalmologic research position at the very best hospital in the U.S) things have changed..

I have really serious contacts in ophth, but as we all know is one of the hardest as **** specialties to get into (last year out of 800 IMG's, only 20 got in, that is a 4 % acceptance rate)

I know I have to apply via the San Francisco Matching Program and all that, however my fear is not in ophthalmology (I have pretty serious letters of recommendation), but in the preliminary year... I have absolutely nothing in order to apply to Transitional or Preliminary Internal Medicine. I did a surgical rotation at Mayo Clinic Minnesota and managed to squeeze a letter of recommendation (Which I dont even know If I will get... its a long story!) but we all know surgery is extremely hard as hell to get into (about the same level as ophtho).

My scores are as follows
Step 1: 240
Step 2: 257
Step CS: pass at first attempt
Step 3: Will take in september and been studying HARD!

What do you suggest or recommend?

I know that my chances of matching are so bad and slim is not even funny.. I had already given up the idea of residency in the U.S... but yesterday everything changed!

Thank you for all your sincere advise, and dont worry im not hopeful just would love to have an outsider's opinion!

Go for it , apply and hope for the best. Even if you dont get in this year , just boost your CV and try again next year. Your scores are good. Work hard and it will eventually pay off.

I got my research position in kind of a weird way that doesnt apply for everyone.. It is an unpaid research scholar position.. Im sorry im not of any help but I wouldnt know what is better..
I do know that clinical research is way better than basic science research tho!

I have heard some people saying than in OB/GYN reproductive medicine research goes a long way.. but thats about it.

Thank you for your honest advice, you always speak your mind out and I like that.
Thats what I have been thinking.. kind of a huge risk (WHY on earth did I decide to fall in love with one of the hardest specialties?) Ohh well no turning back now!

Thanks !

Your high scores mean that you won't be filtered out. I think upon reviewing your application they're going to want to send you an interview.

I say go for it man!
Good luck

P.S. I saw Rochester, MN and I was like "wuuuuut?!". I'm doing research here building up my CV haha
