Question Couple match chance for married couple in IM

Hello to everyone. I and my wife are planning for couple match for 2011. That means we are going to apply on September 1st 2011. We both are interested ONLY in Internal medicine and also we are determined to do our residency in same medical school/hospital. That means we want to be like class mates in residency.

We cannot live separately and it’s unimaginable :-)

We are anyhow going to submit ROL same to same ditto. Suppose we get 10 interviews then we ROL 1-10 in same way as I told you that we both want to be at same hospital and same IM category.

My credentials are step-1 90; CK-92 and CS pass all 1st attempt. Graduated on 2007 December.

My wife credentials are step-1 88, CK 90 and CS pass all 1st attempt. Graduated on 2009 July.

Both planning step-3 in 2011 November.

At the time of interview my graduation gap will be 3.5 years approx and my wife as 1.5 yrs approx. Both are average students at medical school.

Our dream and passion is to do residency in USA and off course we are desperate to build a big hospital in our village in India on return with helping poor to max extent. We are going to apply to community as well university hospitals. We can manage 3 USA LoRs with 1-2 months observership. That’s it. No other extra credentials. We are IMG’s from India

Can we both match together in IM at same hospital. We submit our ROL in same order for IVs. Please advice if anything is necessary. We are married couple and I feel that PD’s like married couple in couple match. Is it true? Will the chances are slim or bright?

Thank u

Default You have good chance

The NRMP Matching software is designed in a way so that it tries to match couples in the same program and Program Directors are advised to pay attention to this issue and so they have to do it whether they like it or not.

In ERAS, there's a question asking you if you are applying with a spouse and if you and your wife answer yes then programs will be made fully aware about this and they will look up your profiles together and decide whether they want to interview both or not interview both.

That said, you have pretty descent chances of being matched together and that chance would be maximized if both of you submit the same rank order list.

However, there's one issue here.

There's a chance that you don't get the same interviews as your wife. I mean it might be that you get 10 interviews and she get 10 interviews but perhaps only 5 of them are common to both of you.

In that case (if you insist on not matching apart) then you have to attend only the shared interviews (in our example 5 only) and in that case the chances of both of you get considerably lower.
