Listening Kindly let me know what my chances are of matching

Im an IMG. Here are my credentials which I am going to use this year for residency application. I would like people to let me know how much chance you think I have in getting a General Surgery, Internal Medicine or Family Medicine Residency (will apply in all 3, but will focus on General Surgery):

Step 1 - 223
Step 2 CS - Passed in 2nd attempt
Step 2 CK - Will give on July 25th and expect result by end of August.
Expect to become ECFMG certified before Sept 15th when application opens.
Have 4 months of USCE (clinical rotations in Surgical specialties)
Have 1 month of research experience at Harvard (Surgical lab)
Have 1 month of US Observership rotation (CV surgery)
Have 4 excellent LORs from US Surgeons
Have 2 publications (with my name in contributors sections)
Have 2 case reports submitted for publication (as first author in collaboration with US surgeons)
Am BLS and ACLS certified (by American Heart Association)
Did a Microsurgical skills training course at Emory
Have loads of volunteer work experience (including in Africa)
Member of Mensa Organization (due to IQ of 172)
Have a gap of 1 year since I graduated from medical school last year in which I only studied for USMLEs and wrote the case reports, ie no clinical practice (i am worried this might be interpreted as time spent away from medicine)

PS: I actually want to go into Plastic Surgery but as it is almost impossible for IMGs to get into it I have planned to do its residency after Gen Surgery (IF I get into Gen Surg tht is).

Thanks.

Here is my honest advice - here it goes

1. Im sorry to break it to you , but forget about Plastics for now. You clearly dont have the score and you have failed once in CS.

2. When it comes to Gen surg - im not sure you will even pass the filter unless you have some connections and they put ur application aside when they see it.(because of your score and ur failure attempt)

You have a lot of Extra things that you have done , which is excellent.

But in your case it will be a tough road. In your case i would make more connections , try to get higher results on remaining exams, and hope for the best.

Best of luck my friend.

I have question dr.sadde ..
For general surgery, he will not pass the filter because step 1 score or because second attempt cs ?
Because we called many many programes(surgery and IM), most of them told us they need score above 210 and 1st attempt cs ..

Thanks in advance ...

Both reasons. But remember there are some programs who dont even need scores when you apply. So maybe applying to those programs can help you. Majority of the programs need scores when you apply. diff criteria for diff programs.

This is a minimum score they "list". Gen surgery programs will not interview below a specific score of I believe 230+/230+ (I'm not sure, info found in NRMP data -- Average step score of sucessful applicants in surgery).

Them giving you a 210 score is their minimum requirement. The filters are almost a SD higher, and change with the applicant pool.

As its said before.. Having the minimum score/passing outcomes required does not equal IV.

Thank you guys for replying to me. I have 2 questions for you:

1. Realistically speaking, if i get suppose 250+ in Step 2 CK, will the PDs overlook my low Step 1 score? Or will they remain fixated on it.

2. What are my chances in IM and FP?

Thanks again.

Default CS kills you

My scores are 223, 229 and cs attempt. 2009 graduate. Not even single interview IM/PEDS/FM. 4 LORS from PEDS university program applied on sept 15th with full application. May be year of graduation is positive for you.

Publicatiions are good. keep FM as backup.

So I m in a similar dilemma, failed the cis portion of step2 cs,step1-221,step2-231,YOG 2008,no visa required.USCE-4 months, all US LORs.Are profiles are pretty similar but you didnt get a single interview, that makes me want to throw in the towel already... I was thinking of applying next yr with step2 cs and step 3 and more USCE but this seems to be a dead end....
Please do share your thoughts...

Default If you dont need Visa you will have fair chance

I know few friends with CS attempt with Green cards or citizenship matched in to university programs last year. You are not same boat of mine. Don't give up.
