Listening Your Honest Opinion Please

Year of graduation 2010 (IMG)
step 1 221 (second attempt)
step 2 198 (first attempt)
step 2CS pass (first attempt)
step 3 (not done yet)
MPH (epidemiology) in a US university here in the US.
Now trying to get an observership at least for one month before September starts but will continue observing probably up-to December

My interest in order is general surgery then internal medicine

Please give me some advice. Do I start a chance in surgery? or are my expectations too high with low scores.
Thank you

Visa status?? LORs? Any research in surgery??

Above 3 will make some difference if they are in your favour

The elective/clerkship you did is an advantage as its the most preferred kind of USCE by program directors rather than plain observerships. And also your step 1 score is good. Thats always a first preference compared to ck.

Try to get some more experience before you apply. At this point any kind of clinical experience will help. Even if its just an observership. Try for a university hospital if you can. And while you are there try to publish 1-2 papers. case reports are the best option. they can be completed fast and sent for publications right away. So try something like that.

Inspite of all this, surgery is still a tough field to get into for a foreign grad. So keep all your options open. I am not trying to disappoint you but its better to have a hold on reality and not be completely lost in dreams. So like I said, keep your options open and apply broadly. Good luck!!

To be fair to you and to be honest , i dont think you will pass the filters to even enter the interviews for general surgery because of your low step 1 score and your step 2 ck score.

Thank you very much for your advice. keep options open, get hold of reality and not be lost in dreams.
I will remember that. Deep down I really have a passion for surgery but I guess I have to be open minded since now am in another country.

Since you have an MPH, you'll easily match in FM.

You have a shot in matching at a decent IM program.

Surgery, not so much, because of the score filters.
