Question Surgery LoR for IM/FM application?

Hi

As a non caribbean IMG I was lucky enough to get 2 clerkships in the US. Unfortunately I did not get to choose which clerkship was offered to me; i gave them choices 1-5 and see which ones they decided to grant me. I ended up doing 2 surgical rotations, but I intend on becoming a IM/FM doctor. What's your take on how these LoR's from surgeons will affect IM and FM program directors' decisions? Will they think I'm choosing their specialties as backups to Surgery?

Ps. One clerkship was surgical/anesthesia ICU, which imo isn't too different from MICU, just that our patients have different types of injuries

When did you do the surgery rotations? Before or After graduation?

Elective rotations before graduation does not indicate the applicants specialty interest.

You can also lower the impact by getting other LoRs from IM and FM rotations. If you could not do it, do observerships or externships.

One thing else you can do.

You can ask those surgeons writing the LoRs for you, to recommend you for IM/FM. This way you can upload it as IM/FM LoR in ERAS, it does not have to be Surgery LoR.

Thanks StepTaker. I took the electives while I was still a student. I have already uploaded the LoR, they're specialty nonspecific, so I hope they'll be ok.

Just be honest in your interview, tell them that your priority was to get clinical experience, and that , surgery was the rotations that you were able to get, they will appreciate your effort
