---

Due to rapid changing of plans by the New York State Department of Health to
re-configure Brooklyn's health care system, we are presently not interviewing
candidates for residency positions in our Internal Medicine residency program.
However, we are keeping all applications on file and continuing to accrue
both new applications and updates and additions (USMLE transcript updates,
ECFMG certificates, Letters of recommendation, etc.) to already submitted
applications.

Since we are not entering the NRMP match, we will not be interviewing
candidates before the date of the match. However, after the match, we may
call selected applicants for interviews.

Please do not contact us either by e-mail, telephone, or by mail as to the
status of your application since we currently have more than 3,000
applications and we cannot respond to everyone who contacts us.

If there are any changes in our status, we will contact all applicants by
e-mail.

Eric A. Jaffe, MD, FACP
Associate Chairman, Department of Medicine
Associate Program Director, Internal Medicine
Professor of Medicine, SUNY-Downstate Medical Center

What does this mean except from the obvious message

Is this a wait-list or what?

I just got this email from UMC:

Thank you for submitting an application and for your interest in our program.
Our Selection Committee has completed their review and an email was sent via
ERAS to the applicants selected for an interview. If there are any
cancellations for future interview dates, the committee will do another review
and the selected applicants will be notified via ERAS.

Best wishes,
Laura Cruise

Same rejections this week plus an IM prelim rej from Virginia Mason in Washington. I've heard from quite a few sources that mid November is a good time of month for IMG's and judging by other forums, it looks like people have started to cancel their IV's already. It's still frustrating not hearing much for the last couple weeks though. Anyone else hear anything or pretty much in the same boat?

For what it's worth I spoke to one of our Pain fellows who was a recent attending at UMass and also an SGU grad. Regarding the low fill rates of seemingly IMG friendly programs he said that if programs don't have good US applicants they will purposely not rank many and look to the scramble to fill their spots with good applicants who didn't match into Ortho or Surg etc. Whatever is left they interview the good IMG applicants and they fill the remainder of the spots. This results in programs with a relatively high number of IMG's as residents yet few that formally interview there. Not that it makes a difference for interviews but it does put those NRMP numbers into perspective. He said although a lot of programs show empty spots, they will almost all fill through the scramble.

I have heard that they do this with failures at ortho derm ect. However how do they interview imgs after the match has gone out? If we do t get interviews I find it hard to believe we would be able to scramble in. But honestly I'm not sure how it really works. Maybe you can explain the scramble/soap process some more. At this point I was trying to to go there yet but with only 3 ivs it is worth hearing about right around now lol

I don't know the precise details but having spoken to an upperclassmen who matched at Case Metrohealth in Anesthesia, he had to SOAP into a surgery pre-lim spot after matching into the Advanced position. He said that every program in every specialty is open to every applicant through ERAS. You can look up each program and apply the same way you did when you applied on Sept 15th except that there is no charge (I'm not 100% sure about this fact). When looking up the programs, you will be able to see which spots are empty at which programs. Only people that haven't matched have access to this list so you can't have your friends searching on your behalf. Once you apply, the programs will contact you by email, by ERAS or by phone and may or may not conduct an interview either on the spot or through Skype. They can then make an offer within a certain time frame and you have some hours within which to look over the program information and either accept or decline. Essentially it is the same process we're going through now except open to every field and greatly expedited. I'm sitting at 2 IV's myself so the SOAP is definitely a reality. Hope this helps!

Greetings friends,

I'm a fellow IMG applying to anesthesia with 3 interviews. One of them being at NYMC. It seems others on this forum received an invite from this program as well. I didn't notice it before but seems like this program might be prematching from the email I got.

"If you are offered a residency position with our department, you will be assigned to a WMC contract. I have attached the 2013-2014 WMC contract for your reference. Please make sure that you read it over.
In the event that you are unable to keep your interview appointment, please let me know ASAP! "

What do you guys make of this? I thought prematches were a thing of the past.
