Curriculum Vitae Missing this match , how to utilise coming year

Hi friends,

I'm a 2013 June grad. I'm done with step 1 n CS n 2 clerkships in US. I was all set to take Ck and apply this year itself..but due to some reasons..I could not gear up myself for ck..and I'm still studying for it. Guys it breaks my heart to miss this match by a few weeks but I don't want to compromise ck score. So I'll prepare well for it.

Ill be left with all most a year to apply for 2015...can u suggest me how to utilise the next year best to ensure the match . I'm worried about gap n extra added yr to Yog. Please suggest. Even to think of one whole year to anxiety kills me..

Your input will be appreciated guys. Good luck to all.

USCE is the answer.

Observerships, externships, research, volunteering, ...etc

Thanks.. Do you rate observerships higher than research? I hav 2 months hands on clerkships .

I may not be able to get a research ..also I'd be worried if that research doesn't get published..

Does step3 (with a good score) increase the number of Ivs one gets for IM?

Research is higher than observeships.

Although a research that is published in peer reviewed journals is wonderful but an experience in research does count even if it does not culminate in publication.

It's a double-edge sword. Even as a US citizen, it will help you land more interviews. However, if you fail it, it will severely damage a good application. That's why I'm planning to take it after the match, but before the start of residency on July.

But if you can prepare excellently and take it before the application period starts on Sept 15, then, that's a lot better.

why not..if one is done with other steps ..and has so much time before the next match..he/she should definitely take step3 ..give it time..and do well in it.
my seniors told me it grants atleast 2 more IVs. Plus in whatever Ivs u get..you tend to be ranked higher in them becuz of your step 3. ..

I'm applying for the 2015 match too. I doubt I'd be able to afford to spend an entire year till next match doing observerships and research in the US. Maybe 4 to 5 months at best. If I spend the remaining time working as a junior resident (working in a hospital after completing your basic medical degree, MBBS, in my case) in Internal Med or its subspecialties, that would not be considered a gap right?

true , won't be a gap. I plan to do the same . plus you get to earn a good chunk of money as a JR in our country. Yes, I agree I won't be able to afford more than 3 months of observerships ( seeing the current dollar rate) . Instead i'd invest time in doing step 3 and doing it well.!

Yep, that's what I said. If he can ace it before the application period starts, then, he should take step 3.

I don't understand why you don't have time... You can apply without 2CK, take it end of january and still have the scores available for the match. Deadline Feb 26...

LOL , Coz we actually WANT to match at a decent place. Objective is not just applying for it, my friend.

one year is plenty of time. find some clinical research, not basic science! and in parallel do observerships. clinical research might get published after a year, basic by default will not!
research won't count much, actually as much, for residency, but will help you for fellowship. about year off, i would not worry at all if you ar edoing something meaningful and you can account for the time.
