As an IMG we face several scenarios when applying to General Surgery.
Scenario 1 - You apply to Categorical Only - to not sell yourself cheaply by not applying to prelim. But you risk of not having a shot at prelim spots.
Scenario 2 - You apply to both Categorical and Prelim - You show that you really want the specialty. You risk of not getting a Categorical spot.
Scenario 3 - You apply to Prelim Only - You know your chances of getting a Categorical position are slim , so buy applying to prelim - you hope for the best.
So my questions to you folks are - When would you go for Scenario 1 vs 2 vs 3 ?
Which one would you pick in case of Community based vs University Based Vs Community affiliated with university Hospital?
