Listening Failed CS; Chances of Matching!

So I am looking for an opinion;

My husband graduated in 2007, 221 step 1 and 208 step 2 CK; failed first time CS and now giving second attempt.

He is applying for this year match;

What are the chances for his interview and match? Either this year or next? Should he be considering any other options?

He is planning to apply to Family Medicine and Psychiatry; and doesn't need any visa sponsorship.

Any opinion would be extremely helpful.

Thanks

To be honest, an attempt in usmle is a lethal blow to the application, but more than 1 failure...it basically annihilates your chances of ever getting into a residency. People don't like hearing that, but what good is an opinion if its not sincere?

You are absolutely right. An opinion has to be the truth. He has one failure on the CS. There are no other attempts besides the CS. So is it worth applying? I mean this came out of no where. He did really well on the CIS and SEP and he failed in the ICE.

So what are his chances with this one failure?

@summer
Dr shahzaib is not a PD and obviously not God.
Even if you or your husband never failed,failed once or even x10, he has 100% chances of matching & 100% chance of never ever matching.
Let him apply and pray to his God

@blade. Thank you sooooo much!!!! You are absolutely right. I actually am starting my usmle journey however my husband is applying this year. I tell him never say never and don't give up. One failure won't hurt. It is how you present yourself in an interview and how you improve yourself.

Also. If I may ask. He wants to plan this upcoming year in case he doesn't match. He already has an observership scheduled in January. He is looking forward to improving his application by improving on his experience. So far we only found two hospitals that would offer observership. What do you say? How do we find more hospitals to gain his USCE?

Family medicine and psychiatry are not very competitive residencies. I think you should not give up your journey, you just have to be more modest and try hospitals that accept residents with an attempt. In my opinion one of the best qualities of the human being is his capacity of adaptability. Try to adapt to this situation and evolve! Losers usually give up when they face the first real problem, don't be one!

We found hospitals that will accept an attempt on matcharesident.com. So I know he is targeting those programs and when applications are sent out on the 15 he will also be contacting coordinators. He was extremely devastated when he came to know about his result. But like you said never give up. I know his scores aren't the best but at the same time he is not wanting any visa sponsorship, he does have USCE and is aiming to build on it and if not matched he does plan for the step 3 as well. So I hope he stands a chance for interviews and match

Given the data in the 2013 matching, a few applicants who passed the CS in 2nd or 3rd attempt still do match, although with a lower chance.

Can you update us if your husband matched?

Most second attempt CS students are ignored by Prog. Co-Ordinators

The best back up would be an Awesome CV/ Extensive USCE / Good LORs from US Univ Hospitals and a Flawless Personal Statment.

I got all that and matched this year - hope this helps your husband. It's a paid program but then you get what you pay for.

No Interviews? No Match in 2014? A program that takes you closer for the 2015 match

Good Luck.

Failure on CS is viewed by PD's as if the student either can't speak English or very weird/awkward
