Congrats! What speciality did you get an IV from? What are your credentials?
As for the IV, you should pick the earliest date possible.

i was thinking about this today

is it better to go early so they don't have much to compare you against or is it better to go late so you're fresh in their mind? hmmm

Go early if they offer prematch. But I doubt any programs will do it given all in policy.

I personally don't think it'll make any difference whether you schedule your interview early in october or late in december or january, especially when there's no prematch. The most important thing is your performance in your interview and that will contribute heavily to getting matched.

I think every interview has areas the panel grade participants on.
So with this in mind then going early or late would not affect ur performance or only u are well prepared. Aside this, I also believe its a human institution and so the impact u make on them is "memory dependent".

Of course comparison would be made if u go late. But u stand high chance of winning the slot if u perform better in the later date. So it still depends on how well u are prepared for the interview and not the time u go for the interview.

I have sat as a panel member interviewing poeple on several occasions and days. We do compare but even if u come early and still perform ur standard is still not easily forgotten.

Default early if cold area..

I scheduled mine early because some states that snows alot (like the states by great lakes) they snow heavily and sometimes people cannot make to interview because flights get cancelled...etc.

I have an interview invitation from snowy place so I scheduled it early on purpose to prevent incidents due to weather.

If yours is from those place, you should schedule it early.

If not, just pick a date that it doesn't interfere with your research / work / daily activity ..etc.

Congrats for the first interview offer, its certainly exciting. I took have gotten an early interview offer and chose the earliest date possible, because (1) I want to see how the process works and (2) It doesn't matter when you go.

I want to go early because this program is not the highest on my list, but regardless, its a program and its an interview and I take it seriously. But, I also know that watching clips on youtube or answering questions out loud from reading from the computer or doing a "mock" with friends is not the same as going to an actual interview and gauging yourself when you see other candidates there as well.

Secondly, I don't think there is any correlation between when you go and how they rank you. If that's the case, then no one would offer interviews in October, they would all be in late December and early January. It's done to accomodate as many as possible and they clearly have tabs on people to make sure they remember which person was impressive, etc. and they can rank appropriately.

So, if given the chance and its not a big name program and you probably won't end up ranking it that high, then go ahead and get it done early.

An answer based on evidence:

1. According to certain study; there is no correlation with an early interview and not getting match (Source: The succesful match).

2. Not all intervies are in a panel style.

3. @Shel...

if you don't know what does "preparing for an interview" means... you are in serious troubles... However, you can fix this: there are many books and sources in the internet. Prepare yourself.

4. @shriman... it's a big mistake to rank a program based on its reputation. I would advise you to rank them based on your own "gut feeling" and the impresion that they gave you after the interview. By doing things the way you sugest... you are at a greatest risk of getting unmatched. Also, how come a program is not the highest on your list if you haven't even interviewed there?

5. @shriman... careful also... beware that you might ended up ranking that "not a big name program" as your first option in your ROL.

Good points made above, but I didn't say that rank a program based on its reputation, etc.

A simple point that for the very first interview, if its a place where you know you would not want to go to, then use it as a chance to familiarize yourself with the process. This point has been made to me by my seniors on multiple occasions.

If it's a place you're highly interested in, schedule it in the end. By then, you'de be well-trained in the mystical art of interviewing.

If it's a low-ranking program, schedule it early on. You can use those programs to learn and familiarize yourself with the process.

It wont matter much to the program director if it's early on or late.
