this is not something to worry about..there have been rumours in the past about IMGs being non existent 2010 onwards and blah blah but every year the match statistics proved them wrong..dont base your decision of usmle on these rumours ..if you get decent scores and have all what it takes to get matched , you will..since you are in final year you can do electives, get good scores and improve your CV..rumours come and go every year but the fact is doctors are always in demand..good luck

Hi,
There is nothing you can do about it.
But people say that every year the match is worsening and 2015 is going to be worse than 2013 , I guess.
I fell it has to do with the increasing number of new AMG and the stabilization of Residency spots. Anyway, there is nothing you can do about that. Its like a substrate limitation, so try to evolve and gather the resources the best you can!
The Strongest will survive.

The Fittest will survive. Meaning, you should decide whether you really want this or not. (Some people have pretty decent alternatives). If you made up your mind to do it, prepare, stay more informed than the average and adapt accordingly. There isn't much more you can do. Aside from the financial investments, preparing for step 1 and step 2 CK (but not CS of course...) will make you a better doctor in the process, no matter what happens.

Firstly, everyone above is right in saying that some of this has been blown out of proportion for sure.

Having said that, all of this fear is based on an article, I believe NJEM, that said that starting 2016-2017, the number of residency spots in the US will equal to that of graduating seniors from MD and DO schools in US. This is based on the number of new medical schools that have opened up and are opening up and the time frame in which those graduates will be eligible for the match. Secondly, many schools in the US are increasing their existing number of seats year by year given the recent Obamacare law, which provides for greater funding for residency in sequential years and gives incentives to medical schools to increase seats to meet the growing demand.

So, worry is there, which is legitimate about 2-3 years down the road. However, for you and most of us on this forum right now, the worry should be USMLE Steps 1, 2CK, 2CS and ultimately, matching!!

Each year there is also an increase in the number of residency programs that become available and also an increase in the number of seats residency programs offer. Every year there are so many seats that go unfilled as well.

Yes, that increase in number of seats correlate with increase in medical students spots in USA

This JAMA paper is exaggerating.. There's no way they create those projected new spots out of nothing in a year or two.. However, the competition will be fiercer, and we'll probably gonna see more and more frightened IMGs studying their bottoms off to get 260's and 270's..
