Info Is Volunteering Good?

How much does volunteering, like in red cross will actually help me in building up a CV ??Is it worth ?
And with respect to attending medical conferences does mere attending the conferences help or we need to have given presentations in those ???
I am an IMG for 2015 match. Thanks in advance.

Good questions and I hope others join in providing more insight and perspective.

Yes, it does no harm in volunteering for Red Cross, etc. and adding that to your CV because it shows that you are more engaging. Will it help? It certainly won't hurt, and thats a plus.

For the second question, going to conferences is never bad, allows you to see PDs, etc. but unless you are presenting, there isn't a need to attend every single one. Just use your judgement.

If it is such that we can put it on our CV, then by just attending the conferences, we can get the certificates and use them for improving our resume if so is the case, and giving abstract & / presentations isn't possible.

Is it worth doing so???
Can anyone tell ??

Attending conferences does not help in building the CV.

But volunteering specially in well recognized institutes such as the Red Cross will greatly enhance your CV. So great in fact I can safely as good as you doing clinical work in the US.

IMO volunteering is better than having gaps in your timeline. If you are not doing anything then volunteer, it'll give you something to talk about.
In my CV I have several volunteer work and 1 particular one gave me interesting topics to talk to my interviewer.
