Smile 2014 IMG Interview Experiences

Got my first interview out of the way today (Baystate Medical Center, Springfield, MA).
I'm on the train back home and should be studying for CS (but that's not going to happen!).

Overall, a pretty pleasant experience....

Arrived early, interview started early, lasted 35 minutes.
Interview was one-on-one with the Program Director.
I then met informally with the program coordinator and chief resident separately. Both were super friendly and happy to answer any questions that are beyond the scope of the PD's remit.

I suppose I was lucky in that the PD was a physician-scientist, so a fair chunk of the interview was chit-chatting about research and funding strategies. Keep in mind that the PD is very knowledgeable about research in general, so don't bluff!

Surprisingly, they actually DO pay attention to your application and know you quite well before you step inside the interviewing room! Clearly, they read the personal statements and the full application. I've heard that many programs don't bother until you are in the room and get you to rehash your application.

The majority of initial questions were about:
Defining yourself,
Where your interest for internal medicine comes from,
Where you see yourself in 7-10 years,
What (specifically) interests you in Baystate's program? (know about their "learner-manager-teacher" approach - they are quite proud of that!)
Have some program-specific questions to ask (the more philosophical the better!).

Did they give you any feedback? I mean, do you feel you can have a good guess of what to expect from them?

Well, I think it went pretty well.
"We have faculty members who would be very interested in working with you" and "We hope to hear from you in the future" was about all I got.

Nobody said "Holy christ - you are f'ing awesome and we MUST have you". To be honest, I'd probably run far away from any program who would be overly enthusiastic.

Anyway, we'll see what happens.
We all know there's what the PD says, what the coordinator says, what the 'representative' current resident says, and what actually goes on in any residency program.
I got a good vibe from them though. I certainly wouldn't be gutted if Baystate was the only offer I got.

To be honest, I need to read up more about how the matching system actually works. I think it's probably a little more complicated than I originally thought.

I'm half-way through interviews now.
Not surprisingly, there appears to be common questions coming up all the time during interviews.
Pretty much every interview has been very relaxed and no 'medical' questions have been asked.

My top questions (asked of me) so far:

1. Tell me more about your XXXXXXX pastime? (asked by everyone)
2. Why did you pick XXXXXXX program?
3. What do you see yourself doing in 10 years?
4. Tell me more about this XXXXXXX research you did.
5. What qualities do you think a good resident has?
6. Tell me about a recent study you read.
7. Scenario: you suspect a colleague is under the influence at work. What do you do?
8. Are you planning to remain in the US after residency?

What's the best answer to the question - do you intend on staying back in the US after residency?

Short answer: Yes, you want to stay.
Especially for university and university-affiliated community hospitals. In these cases, express a desire to pursue specialty training.

If you have visa issues, you can say you wish to stay as long as your visa allows and pursue any and all avenues to obtaining permanent residence.
I know that's not an option for many people, but sometimes it can be done.
