Default how are you going to answer the 'what is your weakness' question?

hey guys,

i'm prepping for interviews right now by rehearsing potential questions. one that is giving me a lot of trouble is the describe your weakness question.

I know a lot of people go the route of 'im a workaholic' or 'im a perfectionist' but that's annoying and PDs hear that all the time and its kind of a nonsense answer in my opinion.

i'm thinking of admitting an area I have difficulty in and then explaining how I will overcome it, and the steps I have already taken to do so.

but I can't think of anything

help please?

'im a workaholic' or 'im a perfectionist'

Is a bad idea.

Question addresses your ability to evaluate yourself.
We are all foreigners, our weakness is second language and foreign med school.

Now you want to turn it into advantages with your next sentence.

man, I don't know if I want to say having studied in a foreign med school is a weakness. they'll already ask why I went there and if I regret it. if I say oh it was a great experience and stuff but then two questions later say its one of my weaknesses that's kinda wack.

the second language one, I hope you mean as far as patients go. not like oh English is my second language because im a foreign. in which case,
I was thinking something along the lines of saying oh I had trouble communicating with Spanish patients in my rotations, I know acknowledge the importance of understanding the patient population and as such I look to try and familiarize myself with the dominant languages found in a patient population for the program. something like that maybe.

I'm so tired of the "I'm a perfectionist". I helped a few friends of mine write out their personal statement or help them with interview prep and they all said it in some way. Ridiculous. It sucks that in my case it is my biggest weakness and I can't use it because it's so played out. Eventually it leads to procrastination which is the actual weakness of being a "perfectionist" and my main problem. Of course, I don't plan on saying I procrastinate.

I think what you've mentioned on Spanish is a great way to start. Elaborate how you plan to tackle this with courses on your free time or having your Spanish speaking friends speak only Spanish to you.

I'd love it if we could be honest about everything. "Listen, I procrastinate a lot, it takes a lot of effort for me to be focused, but by deadline you'll have what you need from me... and it'll be flawless". Truly, going to a foreign med school is a weakness in general...but that can't be said.

Just say to PD sir I have evaluated myself thoroughly and my biggest weakness is that I am agreeable to my faults and my lack of conviction and nervousness in performing new procedures on patients. I hope with the rigours of training involved in the said program I will be able to overcome my shortcomings and emerge to be a better physician.

Never say something negative about yourself or others in an IV (rule #1), you have to give an answer by the book, something like:
- I have being told, I work too much . Or
- I got too attach to my patients, or something in that lines

PD don't want to hear, about how lazy you are, or how you are never on time...

Believe me

There is only one right answer if you want to match, an that is " People tell me tha I work too hard, when I start a project, I can not stop until I finish" and you can add something else, if it is not too damaging fir you image, trust me

Its better to feed them cliche's and BS rather than the truth .

Honesty does not get you a match.

You are selling a product, yourself, so you might need to stretch the truth a bit.

Just say something that COULD be seen as a negative (workaholic, emphatic etc) but not 100% and always say how you have worked to improve yourself.
