Question Research Fellowship

I am currently starting my pre final year in India (5 year program) and am interested in general surgery residency, I would like to know when I can apply for research fellowship so as to be able to start 2years from now. Also does one need to be a student to get a research fellowship?

Not sure what you mean by 'research fellowship'? Do you want to just do research in the US while writing your USMLEs? If so, you'll have to find an MD who is a researcher and willing to take you on board for their project(s).

There are other research scholar positions available on full time basis for minimum of one year, but they are hard to find and generally given to people who are allowed to be employed/paid (you will need work permit for that). If you dont have USC you can only do voluntary research - if you can find one.

No, i recently found out that there is something such as a research fellowship. This is different from finding a research post somewhere prior to starting internal medicine residency. This is an actual fellowship which is research oriented. Here are a few examples:

check out this link at NYU

https://www.med.nyu.edu/medicine/id/...owship-program

you can see that for infectious diseases, there is the classic type fellowship designated as "Clinician Track" which is distinct from "Clinical investigator track".

Another example is at UCLA

https://www.uclahealth.org/Infectiou...p-program.aspx

If you check this link out you'll see that they also have something called an academic research track.

Hope that helped!

These fellowship tracts are for Internal Medicine graduates only, they may accept other specialties but you have to have graduated from a residency program in order to be eligible to apply.

OP: You are looking for a job in research, whether that is as an associate, assistant or volunteer. The only way to do that is cold-call researchers you are interested in working with or attend conferences and network to get a shot. Good luck
