Question IM Residency After Psychiatry Residency

Just wondering if anyone has done or know of any possibilities of getting double board certification in IM after completing Psych residency, i heard that there are funding issues or is it easier to do double board certification, how do we find out about those funding issues?

While doing Psych residency what other specialities can one switch too after completing pgy-1 or Pgy-2 like can we switch to IM or Neurology, or would it be better to complete psych residency and then apply again for IM residency, that would be i beleive 4 + 3 years right?

and what are the chances of getting into IM residency after becoming board certified or completing residency in psychiatry ? Will it make your application more competitive?

Would appreciate any suggestions Thanks

The funding issue that you are talking about is that you cannot be resident for more than a total of 7 years so I guess combining Psych and IM is OK.

Yes. You'd be more competitive when you apply with 3 years of USCE already.

But let me tell you one thing. It's very unlikely that you'll change to IM after finishing psychiatry residency, this is because you'll be fed up with training and you just want to start earning money specially being a psychiatrist you can make tons of money. Also, there is good chance that you'll like psychiatry once you train in it

So it can be done, i am not talking about dually accredited program like psych/med for 5 years, i am talking about doing them separately like do Psych first for 4 years and then IM for 3 years, i heard that they will only fund one residency, doesnt matter how long it is? I have seen people who have done double board certification in the past but not sure about now, So you sure about the 7 year rule? that would be perfect 4+3 in this case, Any reference?

I think it will make your application more competitive as well after 3 years of ACGME traning but wouldnt they ask you that why did you do psych first and why not IM, would it be a red flag or something ? and after completion of first residency you would apply through eras same way as your first residency right?

Also what will be the possibillites of transfering out to a dually accredited Med/Pscyh program, Any suggestions?

Am not sure about the 7-year-rule I just heard it several times before but I have no official reference.

It wouldn't be a red flag. You just tell them I changed my mind.

I think transferring to combined med/psych residency after one or 2 years of psych residency is possible.

Yes. You apply through ERAS just like any other application.
