Question How do I use my time before I apply?

Hi Guys,

I need some advice about the matching process!
I just took step1 (still waiting for the results).
I know the score is important !
So now I started studying for the CK.
My plan is to apply for an IM program (for 2014 is obviously too late).

Here my situation: I graduated in 2006 , and I completed my residency in my home country in July this year (general surgery, I know it sounds wierd, but it really makes sense in my case).
I also did part of my residency in the UK (18 months), in Germany (1 months), and finally did 2 months observership in the US.
I'm planning on "working" again in the same hospital where I did my observership as a "non-employee" for 3 months.
I also did some lab research while I was in London, for about one year, and I have a pubblication on cancer research because of that (I'm NOT the first name!!)

Now the question (if you didn't die of boredom yet and read until here): I have time.... so, beside studying hard for CK and praying that my step1 score will be nice, what do you think is the best use of my time before applying for the match??

thank you!

My opinion is according to people that have counsel me, observerships, volunteer work, different places to ensure you good LOR, and definitely it will all depend on your grades, if you feel you could take step 3 that is also good. hope it helps good luck!

Thank you so much!
Do you think an externship will definitely increase my chances? I'm asking because externships seem to be expensive, am I right?... and if I'll invest money I want to make sure that it is with it,

Use your time to try to make the right connections, observer is ok, but if you are able to work in a research project with some IM professor that is willing to help you to get in the place you want, it's way better for you to get IVs! Trust me, It can do you wonders! Although it's hard to find such a good soul willing to giving you a hand..

Thanks cearamor! Will try to push my (not many) contacts and see what they can do! Apparently, there are no rules here...
