Unhappy So depressed: excellent credentials, no interviews

Dear All,

I have been following this for a while, and now as I am seeking support,I would like to get information from experienced users here.

I applied to surgery and surgical specialties this match. I used to believe that my credentials are excellent, and here they are in no particular order:
- recently ECFMG certified in August
- 6 month of USCE at reputable places - all surgical rotations
- IMG of 2008
- Research position in neurosurgery at one of the top 20 institutions worldwide - for over a year till now
- currently pursuing a Masters degree in neuroscience
- USMLE 92, 93, pass all first time and withing 6 months period.
- US green card
- 4 Very strong US letters, 2 Excellent Canadian letters - all surgical specialties
- 3 publications, 2 presentation - and others were submitted or on the way of submission
- numerous volunteer works
- member of numerous professional societies and associations
- Revived few awards and honors, from my medical school, surgical association, and research society.

I applied in late September to 250 Programs coast to coast for General Surgery - both categorical and preliminary, university and community base.also applied for Neurosurgery and few ENT - as they have been my dream.

I haven't gotten any single interview till now. over 50 percent (as I have stopped to count) have replied with rejections !

I am now so depressed, frustrated, lost my faith and not sure what to do next.. lost lots of money, good times for nothing - not even an interview. I feel that the work of over ten years since high school has gone in vain!!

Now, I dont have the energy to continue the Masters degree, nor my research work - as they have not been even regarded by anyone!

I feel I retired very early before even I start ...
Should I go back home, stay quiet, and do nothing ... this seems like a wrong way, I should have taken, and I wish it hasn't been open at all from the beginning, so I would have stepped into it.

Default sorry!

I am so sorry for you..
I think matching has no solid rule
I know some people who are old graduates, usmle score 80s and got matched
have you included relatively "low-profile" programs?
Are IM or FM intolerable to you?
Anyway, I think if you insist on surgery, you have to get more USCE at more hospitals and depend on being matched at any of them i.e. CONNECTIONS

Did any programm explain the reason why they rejected you???
of course its not the end.you can still match and you have 50% rejections out of 250...
so dont lose your faith and keep us updated!
i m sure you will match!!!

i believe you have a bright future! there is something you must pray to God about only if you believe in prayers! your credentials are great!

this is to let you know u hv far higher chance.

once you have make the step on the journey dont give up!
please dont be so sad moltivate yourself and get the courage. you will be matched beyong all doubts. but please pray even if you dont believ in prayers please pray or let me hear from you!!! i hope to see you on top!

CONNECTIONS
I agree, and I would say that is the most bizzarre I ever seen. In fact while applying to programs, I tried to look through the profile of IMG residents in that programs, and I found a lot of weird combinations. And wen comparing my self, I thought that I am above average if not on the top of the scale. I really have no explanation, is it like a lottery that we play but have no rules?! that would be humiliating to all of us who work hard, spend a lot, thinking we are investing - yet when waiting for the harvest, we get a corrupt crops.

I did include low programs, in suburbs, and programs not heard off, programs with large pool of IMGS, prelim and categorcial - still didnt work. They were sending rejections as well - which I tried to attribute to my research work.

It will also be very challenging to switch into other -non-surgical specialties, not simply because of my love surgery, but because all of my letters, and experience are only surgery directed.

I'm sorry to hear about that, surgeryaspirant.

Although your CV has great stuff, your USMLE scores are below average. They are the single most important factors in this whole process. Your application is getting filtered out because of those scores, and the program directors don't even get to see all those stuff on your CV.

I think you need to forsake surgery, and apply to other specialties like IM, pediatrics, OBGYN, psychiatry, or family medicine.

As hard as it sounds, this is the truth about the Match (as attendings have been telling me). It's the scores that matter. The rest is just a bonus.
