Surgery Should I still go for surgery?

Hi all,
I am a IMG, YOG 2008. Need visa. My specialty of choice has always been surgery (was doing a surgical residency in home country). Received my step 1 score today..245. Planning for next yr match. Reading the posts I'm kinda confused..the match process is so unpredictable..!
I need suggestion..should I still go for surgery? If so, what can I do to increase my chances of getting interviews?
Any advice will be appreciated.

Just go for surgery if that's your dream. Maybe do an externship and if that's not possible do research asap at a place your are also interested to match. A lot of interviews are given away through someone who knows someone and he says that you are good... a lot of relationship can help get you a good spot.
Send me a pm, and maybe we can talk a little more

all the best

It's tough, but again it's case per case basis. Your YOG is not favorable, your score is very average for IMG applying to general surgery, do you need visa? if yes another disadvantage.

If you feel like you can be happy doing other specialties then switch, otherwise stick with general surgery but understand that it's really tough.

My friend is applying for general surgery, already a surgeon in his country, 2008 YOG from med school. 2011, graduated from home country residency. Several publications, step 1 and 2, 250+, shadowing in several hospitals, several connections, only 2 interview in Gen. Surg. 1 cat and 1 prelim.
