Default If I rank a program 2nd and the program ranks me 1st, what will be the results?

Following the question "I rank them 1 and they ranked me 1", I do not have many IVs; among these few IVs, I have two favorites, one community hospital and one university hospital program. The community hospital recruits 15 trainees, and the PD gave me very high evaluation. The university hospital recuits 35 trainees, and only gave me IV in mid-Jan, which seems to not favor me in terms of the IV date. But I still want to try my luck in the university hospital program. So I am asking if I rank the university program 1st, and the community hospital program 2nd; and the community hospital ranks me 1st, but the university hospital program ranks me low, what the results will be. Can I still get accepted by the community hospital program if I lose the opportunity to the university hosptial program?

I understand that you may not have many interviews, but you should rank them all if you would be ultimately satisfied with going to any one of them. Everyone will have their favorites and those favorites should naturally comprise your top ranked programs.

I don't think that argument holds much water. You could be 20th on the waiting list for an interview, but you could end up as #1 on their rank list based upon your interview performance. Don't sell yourself short.

While I certainly don't claim to be a 'Match Algorithm Expert', here's my take on your scenario:
If the university program ranks you below 35 and all their higher ranked applicants tentatively match to that program (i.e. the applicants rank the university program highly also), then you don't get matched there.

However, then your second highest ranked program (the community hospital) will come into play. If they rank you highly, you'll tentatively match with them.

Sometimes there is some 'funny business' with respect to how the programs match you (i.e. you may be their favorite candidate but they don't rank you highly because they don't believe you will rank them highly - and vice versa). In the event of funny business, all bets are off.

All that said, my approach would be to rank the programs in order of your preference. If you absolutely don't like a program and wouldn't go there under any circumstances, then don't rank them.

You run the highest risk of not matching by engaging in 'funny business' and not ranking all programs you interviewed at. The converse is also true.

Match process goes by your preference. If you rank university program as #1, if there is a spot available there, you will match there. This is regardless of what the community program ranks you.

Default Thanks for all replies

Dear fellow applicants,

Firstly, thanks for all replies. I think that some of you guys did not catch my point. My concerns are: 1) I want to try my luck with the university program so I will rank it the 1st; 2) what the university hospital program (35 positions) ranks me is unknow but I am pretty sure that the community hospital program will rank me high; and 3) if I lose the opportunity of the university hospital program due the low ranking by it, can I be accepted by the community hosptial program (15 positions) since I rank it the 2nd and it is highly possible that it ranks me very high?

For my credential: 1) many years after graduation from medical school; 2) VISA required; 3) some publications (>=5); 4) no USCE, but 4 months of OB; and 5) average scores of USMLE (all by 1st attempts) and Step 3 score will be reported by mid-January. So I will definitely have no "Funny business", e.g., the PD and committee think that I am too good to be admitted to a community hospital; as a result, they will rank me low even if they like me because they do not believe that I will be there in early July.

Once again, thanks for the replies. And I think that my concerns are quite common among applicants who do not have many IVs, usually <5. Anyone who encountered the same questions can post their threads or reply here, and we can discuss it.

OK i think you missed the point, let me break it down:

You rank:
1) university
2) community

Lets say university ranks you 50th in their list and community ranks you 1st:
- when the match run it will look at your list, you have university 1st, so then it will go to university list to compare. If the 49 people above you dont want the university program and a spot is available you will match there. If the spots fill up before you show up in the university list you wont. At this point the system would look at your number 2 preference and compare with their list (community). Because you were number 1 there you will match.

SO If you dont want the opportunity for university program rank them 1st and community 2nd. It doesnt harm you and you wont miss the opportunity.
