Program Directors Letting the pd know about your rank

Should we let the pd know about how we are ranking them? And what if we tell to all of them that we are ranking them first?

Not a good idea. You can keep in touch with the programs, let them know that you are interested , and that they will be high in your ROL, but tell them that your are going to rank them first is not a good idea

PD's dont give a crap if you tell them that. They've all been burned in the past and do not care if you tell them you are ranking them #1. It will not change their decision or where you stand on the rank order list.

I think that pateIMD reached the core value of ranking. It is a lie game: the applicants lie to th program and the program also lie to the applicants because everone, either the applicants or the program committee want to get into the best program they can while the program committee wants to recruit the best candiates they want. But the fact is that everybody ranks the favorite program #1, while telling the PD of backup programs that they will be ranked as #1 so when their real first choice cannot be met they still have the backup programs that may or may not rank them high. Meanwhile, the PDs tell the majority of the interviewees that you are a strong candiate and we want you to be a member of our program.

As an experienced program director and committee, they know the rules of game at the ranking season. Show your sincere interest to the program and say some good words. But still rank your favorite programs on the top.

Actually, although the match algorithms seems to be nicer to the applicants than to the programs, it is what you have been ranked by the program determines if or not you will be admitted into a program. For example, if a program has 10 positions, and you rank it #1. After the match running many rounds, finally you have to compete other applicants who ranked the program in varying oders. If a guy who ranked this program as #20, but he was not picked up by the previous 19 programs and finally was sent here to compete with you. Now the match program found that this guy was ranked very high and higher than you, he got better chance than you to be picked up by the program no matter how you ranked the program. If he was ranked as #10, you were ranked as #11, and all the 10 positions were filled, you will not be picked up by the program and will sent to your 2nd choice.

Well the programs have been doing this for a while... their rank list is static regardless of your email. They have been doing this for a while. If your email gets their before their big meeting, you might jump up a rank or two based on the fact that you are interested in the program.

Whether you write Very High or High or I hope you match there or Rank #1 (not advised) doesnt matter. If a program ranks you #1 on their list, they will not drop you because you said High and not "very" high.

You should definitely send them an email cause it is the norm.

The PD and the committee will rank the best of the interviewees who are most likely to come the highest. So they usually have a draft even before the interview. Additionally, from the data of their prevous incoming trainees, they can easily find out what are the typical candidates they can recruit each year: average USMLE scores, YoG, USCE, IMG vs. USMG, etc.

No harm to write a touchable email to PD and the core committee members; but that does not mean the email will change your position in the program ranking list dramatically because their inbox are flooded with these kinds of emails everyday.
