Help Step-1 failed: whats my future?

Hi,

I am an IMG and had given step-1 last month (November/2010) and have failed in it. Now what are the chances of getting into residency if with more than one attempt on step-1 ? A senior told me that the applications with more than one attempt are just filtered out (removed) automatically when u apply for residency? is that true or what are the facts? And another problem is, that i just got student visa for MPH/USA last week and the program starts in mid January...So I am in a lot of dilemma and terrified with a bit of optimism inside, that I want to prepare for step-1 again and will proceed further. But I would be preparing for step-1, 2ck, cs after coming to US !!So I need your guidance on all these things...as how tough is the road going to be ahead for residency? What is the best way to prepare for further steps after coming to US in parallel to MPH? And is this filtration news a fact?...pls reply early as i am too short of time..thanks

Default Here's the reality

There's no rule that says second attempt passers get filtered out in ERAS.

But the reality is that residency programs are getting thousands of applications and they don't have time to read them all and so they put filters to reduce the number of applications that they read.

I'd say 70-90% of programs will filter you out though this depends on the specialty and locations.

Your best shot is to try to make connections with residency program faculty so that you ask them directly to look at your application and so that it is not filtered out.

The fact that you'll be doing MPH is a great advantage for you. Residency programs really appreciate that degree.

As for how to prepare for the exams. You have the whole of our website talking about that! I recommend you start with the recommended threads lists which are linked from our home page.

Good luck

(I'd say 70-90% of programs will filter you out though this depends on the specialty and locations.): u said this, so is it that they filter it out cose of more then 1 attempt ? or is it that if I ask for a competent position for residency then it's simply rejected?

Residency programs have criteria to filter applicants.
Competitive programs filter all IMGs,
Less competitive programs filter those with scores less than 95 (first attempt),
Less competitive programs filter those with second attempts,
Less competitive programs do not put a filter and they'll get to see your application,

So if you apply for surgery for example, I am pretty sure your application will be filtered out by most programs.
But if you apply to family medicine, or internal medicine then perhaps 10-30% of programs will not filter you out and they get to see your application.

Once they see your MPH they'll get impressed and they'll ignore your second attempt and you'll have a high chance of being called for interview.

All this talk is just approximation and each individual case varies. As I told you if you have connections you can even make it into competitive programs. Also other factors play role like how many IMGs will be applying with you in that year and what's their profile and whether they'll be increasing the residency positions or not and whether there will be more US grads or not...etc

Default Help!

Hi, HIMG2010
I just read your post, and I have a question for you. I'm an IMG too, and I'm very interested in a MPH in USA.... could you please tell me how did you get yours?... It is hard? It is too expensive? How can I start looking for it?
I'd really appreciate your help!
Thanks a lot!
