Help Scored 84, Do I have a chance?

I have 204/84 in step-1. What are my chances for IM residency? If i get a really high score(above 95; for example) in Step2ck, will this be an advantage and will this increase chances of residency?

Please advice!!!!!

Default I think you have

Yes I think you do have a chance.

IM residencies are still taking people with 80s scores as of last year. I don't know what will happen this year.

Try to get high score in CK and pass the CS from the first attempt and try to do some USCE and get good US LoRs.

84 is fine, yet we are seeing scores averaging 85 plus, first attempts and this also goes into effect with your year of graduation and visa status. Answering your question yes the higher your score the more programs you qualify for, for example if you get the 95 you qualify for all programs with min 95 and all those that fall below therefore the higher your score the more programs you qualify for.

We suggest to be best informed although time consuming pull all the IM programs in the country you can get this info from Freida and make an excel sheet and start writing their min requirements across then cross reference your stats to their stats, you will easily see what it is you qualify for

Scores
Year of graduation
US clinical experience Lors
Visa Status

This will give you clear insight into your position.

Good Luck!

Thanks IMG prep for your advise! Please answer one more question.
I will apply for match-2013 (i graduate in june 2012). If i make my list of programs now (data available for match 2011), do you think the program requirements may change in the meantime? What are the chances that new programs will be added and do i need to check the whole list again for these new programs or are they listed separately as new?
Thanks for your time in replying my queries.

No problem our pleasure, this is an excellent question, I agree with you that if you will be applying for the next match, I would hold off on making my list as programs do change what they can offer for example Visas and also their score requirements, we see these as the 2 main things that do change, we have a data entry team of 2 people that have been entering our data for inhouse use and for public consumption for 4 years now, we update our lists 8 weeks after June, this is generally when they will change the picture of their residents and put up the PGY1 pics in the incoming class. What you see most is score changes, a simple example is there was a dramatic increase of failures of the CS exam about 3 years ago and we started seeing that programs that before has mentioned attempts are ok clearly stating NO FAILURE ON CS, this happened in response to the trends they were seeing, this is also true for scores, if you look at scores in the past year for example we saw averaging double 80's for IM but now that is rare, we see an increase from programs score requirements also as mentioned Visas, to be honest this is not a decision to keep IMGs out but do note programs are owned by the hospital and it is more an adminstration decision if the institution will agree to sponsor or not and that may change. One thing you can count on however is if anything programs have become more stringent, yet it will always follow the patterns of the competitiveness of applicants. Hope this helps!

Good Luck

Hi,
I checked out all 336 IM residency programs on FREIDA to see what i qualify for and what i've learnt is that graduation and visa don't really matter in my case (i will apply as soon as i graduate and i am willing to go for a J1 visa-all programs offer it). When it comes to score cutoffs, i qualify for approx 190 programs. Most programs need 2-3 months of USCE and about 20 programs need 1 year USCE (which i will not be able to provide because i graduate in July and i will not have that much time) so that brings the total programs to approx 170. Is this normal?
Also regarding USCE, if i go to the US in mid july and start some form of USCE and do it for 2 months(till mid september) and get some LOR's, when can i logon to NRMP and apply for programs? How much time does it take from the moment i post my lor's to ERAS and they send it to the programs?
What if after submitting my USCE details for 2 months and i continue doing some more USCE, and get some more lor's later (say december), can that be still uploaded and will it be of any use at all in applying for that season or all the lor's and usce must be uploaded only in the start of the season?
Please reply.
Thanks
