Surgery Q: why there are so many unfilled preliminary surgery program

It's time to prepare for SOAP when you did not have convincing performance in this interview season: either two few interviews or no confidence in winning a spot.

I found that there are so many unfilled Surgery/Preliminary Programs. I am wondering why this happened considering there are so many unmatched applicants. What is the nature of Surgery/Preliminary programs? What do residents do for just one year? Why would PD and committee rather let it unfilled than recruit applicants in the SOAP?

Do we IMGs have chance of getting into this kind of program by SOAP if we fail in the NRMP match?

By the way, NRMP will give you the information and permit for SOAP the week before match week; but this does not mean that you do not get matched. Everyone, who is eligible, will get the same information. But the real SOAP will start from the afternoon of March 17, 2014.

The reason is that AMGs don't apply to these positions as they can apply to a categorical/advance Surgery position directly.

It is competitive for IMGs, as they use the same minimum requirements that they use for the advanced categories. An remember they around 95 % of AMGs match in contrast with 50% to 60% of IMGs. Thry are the ones traditionally filling this spots, as it is required for them, to do one year of preliminary surgery, to be able re-apply to a categorical/advanced program.

The SOAP is designed for AMGs only, the rate of success for IMGs is extremely low, but not impossible.

For some reason last yr, there were alot of prelim surgery spots still open after the of soap. I dont know but it almost felt like they were not even looking to fill them or they were blocking the spots.

I have the same feeling; PDs get quite upset if their categorical programs are not filled completely. But for preliminary programs, particularly surgery, no one cares. In 2013, there are so many unfilled spots in this kind of programs across the country. If I do not get matched this year, I would like some PDs get me into these preliminary programs, offer me a job for one year and I can reapply again next year.
