Default Program with BOTH Categorical and Advanced Tracks

Hi! Can anyone please explain how programs that offer both Categorical and Advanced tracks, rank their applicants?

Do they create separate rank lists for Categorical and Advanced, or is the ranking contiguous for both tracks and all applicants, in so that if you are ranked highly by the program you have a higher chance of getting the Categorical position, and then the lower ranked ones will get whatever position is left, i.e, Advanced?

The reason I am asking is I am wondering if ranking the Advanced track first for a program, then Categorical, would affect my chances of matching into that program. (Sounds dumb but the idea of living somewhere else for one year for your prelim excites me.)

Ha! My eyebags ain't Gucci but can sure fit Schwartz, Nelsons, and Williams in em!

I believe advanced and categorical is the same list. For prelim its different. I believe if you match in advance, that is the point at which it will got to your preliminary otherwise down the main list.

Definitely confirm it on the NRMP website.
