Question LORs 2 y/o useful? + Comment if I'm correct about the path to a residency.

A little info about myself and what I know:

I'm an international medical student(4th year MBBS) and would be graduating in 2 years. I have started preparing for the STEP 1 and plan to take it in 1.5 years (june/july 2015. That is mid way during my final(5th) year of MBBS). After which I plan do some electives in the US before my graduation.

After this I would have to do 1 year residency in my home country to gain permanent licence to practice, during which time, I shall be taking both components of STEP 2(this would probably be during first few months of 2017 or late 2016). This is when I would apply and get ECFMG certification.

After this I'd be taking STEP 3 in a few months(and later get full ECFMG certification) and it would be near fourth quarter of 2017 when residency interviews and applications would start.

Is it right that process of residency match is as following:
I would apply to hospitals with residency programs(this is the time they get my CV, LORs, Personal statments etc), give interviews. Those hospitals would then rank me. Then I apply and give my rank list to NRMP and then NRMP announce the match results and I would know if and where I matched.

Now the question:
Would those LORs, if any, I get during those electives in late 2015, be of any use in residency application/match in 2017? Or would it be a waste of time and I might rather do some clerkships/externships during 2017 as an IMG?

+ Any other corrections to my knowledge about the journey to a residency. + Any suggestions/tips?

Thanks.

You are correct about the general timeline for applying to residency. I'm sure you already know this, but you don't apply to each hospital separately, you sign up to a service called MyERAS where you upload all your LORs, personal statements, transcripts etc. and choose which hospitals and programs you want to apply to. You pay an incremental fee depending on how many programs you submit an application to.

With regards to your letters, yes it would be better to have letters that are closer to the year you're applying (ideally a year or less old). However, if that's not possible, I'm sure it's not the end of the world. Just make sure your letters are from well-established US faculty, and if you're applying for surgery, from superstars in their field.

FYI, over the next couple of years, as the number of american graduates starts to equal and overtake the number of residency spots available, getting into good residency programs as an IMG is going to become more and more difficult. So try and do everything within your power to increase your chances of matching.

Good luck!
