Calendar ECFMG Certified at the time of ranking

hi
this part of a reply from ECFMG

Quote:
However, please note that you are not required to be ECFMG Certified to apply to residency programs through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS®), or to participate in the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP). Technically the only thing you need to be eligible to apply to programs through ERAS is a USMLE®/ECFMG Identification Number, and in order to participate in the NRMP (The Match), you must have only passed all examinations required for ECFMG Certification. You do not need to have had your medical education credentials verified in order to be eligible to participate in the Match.
so i guess it is just minimize my chance of being selected by Program director cause i am not certified

and note here that the reason for not being ECFMG certified is that i want to apply during my internship to be able to start directly after the internship and not because i didn't pass all the requirements and usmle exams in order to be ecfmg certified meaning the only remaining mission is to medical schools credentials verified

Default Contact the NRMP

Dear MedicalDR14,

Your case is unique (asking to be ranked during internship!) but am quite sure that you won't be ranked if you don't have your credentials verified by the ECFMG and you don't hold a physical ECFMG certificate in your hand.

I am not sure the reply you mentioned above is coming from whom.

I suggest you email the NRMP here's their email nrmp@aamc.org and ask them specifically about your situation and am sure they'll answer you, just give them sometime.

Once they answer please post your reply here and let's see what they tell you.

Well then, they might have changed the rules. Up to last year, it was mandatory to be ECFMG certified by the time of ranking.
It does not make sense, because if you were ranked and got into residency and then you were not able to be ECFMG certified (for example your college refused to send verification) what will happen! You took a position and the program can't give it to someone else and yet you can't join them!

Post Same question

I have the same question. I was trying to go for applying during my fourth year internship, but almost all of the sources I've read said that you must be ECFMG Certified before being accepted into most of the programs (even though it's not required to submit your application... you just won't be matched if you don't have it). If you look through FRIEDA, you see that in the program's description and general information that there are certain expectations that the program has for IMG's. I haven't encountered a program that said 'no' to ECFMG Certification. Help?

I second your opinion. Even though the NRMP guidelines mentions that you only need to pass the exam and no need to be ECFMG certified, but the reality is that residency programs will not rank you, as they are afraid if you match with them and then later on won't be able to be certified as that will be a disaster for them.

Help Kinda changes up my plan

So what should we do in our year off during the application period? I'm just wondering about what are some options besides getting a job that will take me away from medicine for a while. Would doing a one year volunteering program in a non-health related organization retract from my application?

I'm only a second year student now in the Philippines, so I know I've still got a long way to go, but I always like to plan ahead. I plan on taking the Step one in September 2011, and I have the next couple of years planned out already. During my fourth year, I plan on doing most of my electives back home in Chicago. So hopefully, that will fulfill the requirement for USCE.

So this leads me back to my question as to what I should do during that year off... I also don't really want to do an externship because I know that liability insurance and agencies can get quite costly (and probably wouldn't be worth it if I did rotations in the U.S.). Please correct me if I'm wrong with any of my above statements... Any input is greatly appreciated

Although am not aware of the way medical education is structured in the Philipines but I think you should plan it in a way that you don't have a one year off.
Like by taking the USMLE exams (the three of them) before finishing your internships and then get ECFMG certified right after that.
This should translate to 2 or 4 months of off time before September, not a whole one year.

Well, you must have the USMLE results to get through the filters.

However, if you have a look at "Number of Months" between the date of ECFMG certification and March 1, 2013 (p.85 http://www.ecfmg.org/resources/NRMP-...uates-2014.pdf, official 2013 Match report), you see the proportion of Matched graduates is higher if they are fresh graduates (they received ECFMG certification after September 1, or even after February 1)...

To conclude, I would say you might not have your medical diploma when applying for interviews in September....

Thank you for your reply and input! This is a very old thread. To conclude, I ended up applying after I graduated (April 2013), got a good number of interviews, and matched into Internal Medicine this year. I think I made the right move to wait until I was ECFMG Certified because all of the post-match proceedings require it in order to be processed at the hospital and at the state level. Had I applied during my internship, I would have had to serve extensions for my time off for interviews, thus graduation would have been delayed until May of 2013. This would have set back the medical education credentialing from ECFMG to July or even August (mine took nearly three months). With that time frame, the hospital would have had to wait on my certification to even begin the paperwork which can also be cumbersome and take time. I wouldn't have all of my documents in time to start residency..

I have taken all my exams and passed them. But i guess it takes time for you to get certified? and its necessary to be certified at the time of ranking , so if i apply on the 15th of September . when does the ranking process happen and once i am certified is it automatically updated with the programs ?

ps
my documents are verified by ecfmg

If you passed step 1, 2CS/CK and your credentials have already been verified then your status should change today or tomorrow. You'll get the physical certificate in a couple weeks (sooner more likely than later)
