Default No Interviews? No Match in 2014? – A program that takes you closer for the 2015 match

UMPIRE (University of Miami program to improve research and education) is a program launched in associationwith the Dr. Nirmala Swami Charitable Trust is aimed to prepare foreign medical graduates for residency in the United States.

The program is anchored in developing and conducting a publishable research projects. During the program trainees will also be part of clinical team, practice patient interview skills and be part of problem and simulation based learning.

MISSION STATEMENT

UMPIRE aims to provide a pre-residency United States “academic experience” to foreign medical
graduates exposing them to clinical research, patient safety, clinical rotations, and simulation based learning. As a result of these efforts we expect to improve the profile of the foreign graduates before residency.

DESCRIPTION OF ACTIVITIES

Research:
During the research experience trainees will take our signature month long
research methods course and identify an area of research for the future months. The month focuses on epidemiological and biostatistical training,
identifying a mentor, developing a research idea and completing regulatory requirements (rsap.med.miami.edu)

Patient safety course:
Is an innovative curriculum to assure competencies in preventing medical errors. In the course we specifically address 1) calling for help; 2) teamwork and communication; 3) hand hygiene compliance; and, 4) preventing medication and other system errors.

Clinical rotations:
Will be done under the Global observership program and trainees will be able to become part of a medical team in one of our hospitals. (http://imi.med.miami.edu/education-a...ership-program)

Simulation based learning:
Trainees will be able to take advantage of the multiple simulation courses at the Gordon center for medical education. Specifically, trainees will have simulated patient interviews recorded for feedback, advanced life support and cardiovascular simulation courses

The next batch of students begins on June 15 2014 and admissions are now open. This is a very intensive 6 month program that prepares you for a residency match.

Full details of the program are available by clicking here.

There were two publications in US Journal by one of the Fellows and that was a great boost to the CV and Match.

Hello, I graduated in Dec. 2011 and passed Step 1 on 2012 with a sad 193 on my third attempt. I just finished a year of observership in Puerto Rico, where I'm from. I am currently studying for step 2 ck which I take in April. I know my chances are slim, but should I apply for The Match 2015 this Sept while I do some research or should I take yet another year before applying for 2016 while I work on US experience, my CV and LORs. I know it's more time since my graduation but I'll have more to show on my cv. Is there a cost for this program? Am I elegible? Please help, I'm desperate and would appreciate ANY advice.

Your best bet is to try and go for the 2015 match. The longer you take the slimmer the chances.
Join a program that offers all the help like this one at University of Miami and you should be all set - fingers crossed.
Good Luck.

Hi guys,

I am interested in this program, but as I read from the posted links, this program is only for Indian FMGs. So that means FMGs from other countries are not eligible? Is this program considered externship/observership or clinical research after you have done it?

I am confused. Does this program cost $30,000 ? Does an individual actually PAY $30,000? Kindly elaborate on the cost, because I'm about to scream "SCAM'!!!

These programs dont offer anything that you cant achieve yourself with hard work and perseverance. USCE? Publications? LORs? The vast majority of IMGs who match do NOT use programs like this. They are set up with a front of trying to help IMGs but, in my opinion, simply prey on people who are so desperate to get through the match successfully that they are willing to part with huge sums of money for anything which might help them.

Having a program like this on your CV is nowhere near as impressive as getting it all done yourself.

I am going to have to call BS on this one.

If your scores are miserably low, NOTHING can save you except personal contacts ( personal contacts inclusive of God).

Spending $30,000 on a program that is going to 'help' you get into a program is preposterous.

Invest that money in your damn self. Pay for a masters program somewhere. Learn a new skill. Or better yet, give me the money.
