Default ENT for IMG

Hi guys!

Im a first year medical student from Europe and my goal is to do ENT residency in the US. In a hypothetical scenario do you a guy with these credentials have a good chance to match somewhere in the US in 6-7 years (I know it will hard to achieve but I want to get a sense of whether its completely impossible or not):

- MD from a top medical school outside of the US and UK.
- Really good USMLE scores including step 3
- 2-3 months USCE
- Co-author of some papers during med school
- 1-2 years of ENT research in the US

Also, does extracurricular activities matter at all when applying for residency?

Thanks in advance!

My friend,

The match is an unpredictable process. It is hard to say where this thing is going in the next 1-2 years, all the more in 6-7 years from now...

That being said, and provided you have all these things you talked about (which is not gonna be easy- you essentially described the "perfect" IMG) I believe you would have a shot at last years' match. This would primarily depend on how strong your connections with ENT people in the States are. Since I am not into ENT I cannot say for sure though. You may even need to think about doing some Surgery first.

However, since you are talking about 6-7 years form now there are a couple of other things you will need to consider. The number of US med school graduates is increasing and is eventually going to reach or even surpass the number of available residency spots. This will most likely mean no more IMGs at some point in the next few years. On the other hand, there is a projected physician shortage that may urge the US government to increase GME funding and increase residency spots. Nobody knows what is exactly going to happen.

If I were you, I would still start studying for the steps and working on my resume because it will not be a waste of time for sure. However, since the chances for ENT are already slim and you cannot predict the future, make sure you do not close any doors for residency in your home country or elsewhere.

invest few years in research at ent dept somewhere, preferably work with chair of dept, obtain green card via research, be phenomenal, do your steps amazingly and have extensive, extensive clinical experience here in us. maybe, than , there is way to ent in that very institution.

OK guys, thank you so much! I have been offered a research spot (in my home country) for this summer in ENT. If I take it I plan to do research every summer during med school and possible and possibly a little bit during the semesters as well. However, if I don't have a fare chance after that and some research experience in the US maybe I should reconsider my plans.

Do you think I'm naive going for ENT? I rather do another specialty in the US than ENT in my home country.

I apologize for the bump but I need to figure out what to go for in the next few days. I don't know if it changes the situation but my med school is ranked higher than most US med schools. I mean, would may chance be like 30 % or 80 %?

Once again, I apologize for being eager.

Default Residency in Orthopedics

Hi Friends

I believe getting Residency in Orthopedics is really hard.

Can anyone suggest me any possibilities of Orthopedics Residency in US for foreign Medical graduate.

A)I have more than average scores in both Steps( USMLE).

B) I have few months of US clinical experiences in General surgery, trauma and orthopedics.

C) Permanent Residence status in USA.

D) Recently Completed Residency in Orthopedics and trauma surgery from home country(Asia).

Can I try for Orthopedics ?

Do you know any programs that are IMG friendly ( interested in Orthopedics)?

Please suggest me what will be the other residency options for me with above credential ( that will be easy for IMG in USA).

Please suggest me
Thanks in advance
