Certificate How long it takes for the ECFMG Certificate?

Hello everyone,

I am an IMG and m planning to apply for the coming match. I m done th Step 1 planning to take CK in May first week n CS in mid june.

How long does it take to be ECFMG certified after getting my CS result (which is the last exam I will be taking)?

According to USMLE website I will be getting my CS result on or after August 19, so will I be ECFMG certified by September 1st and start applying for the match on 1st?

I am very confused and wondering if I should be preponing my CS. Please help. My credentials have been verified.

Default Don't worry

Hi...I just want to remind you that you don't have to be ECFMG certified by the time you apply for residency. ECFM certificates will be required by programs before they submit the rank of order list which is around Feb/March the following year. You'll have received your certificate by that time. Good luck !!!

I have no idea about that, but in that case I will leave it blank. It won't cause any problem.

In ERAS you have a section that asks you about your ECFMG status.
Here's a screenshot

In that field, if you say YES, you have to put the date. Otherwise it will result in error.

The date of your ECFMG certificate will not be known until you receive the physical certificate in the mail.

Your OASIS status "Standard ECFMG Certificate Tab in your OASIS" does not show you the date of issue immediately after you pass the exams, it will be updated only after they send you the mail, which means 2-3 weeks after passing your last USMLE Step.

Yes, you cannot put the date because you don't know it until your receive the physical ECFMG certificate.

The ECFMG expedites certification processing during the second half of August because they know that applicants like you are desperately waiting for the certificate. So I guess yes, you will be able to get your certificate in time before September 1st, even if few days delay, that's not a great problem.

I want to remind you of an important issue here. Your friends may tell you that you can apply in ERAS on September 1st and then later on you can update your profile with the ECFMG certificate date. Don't do that. Because most residency programs download your profile immediately when you apply and they may filter you out if they see you don't have a certificate and then later on your update will not be effective because they have already filtered you out.
So don't apply until you get the ECFMG certificate date even if that means that you don't apply exactly on September first.

In this case I agree that you should postpone sending your application to ERAS until you received your ECFMG certificates as It will improve your chance of getting interview and you have cleared all the exams reiquired for certification. But I just want to emphasize that not all programs require ECFMG certificate as a prerequisite to get into consideration. Many IMG applied without the certificate and still get matched.

I have a question here. What is the latest date we can be ECFMG certified? Say if you want to apply for the 2013 match, what is the last day you can be ECMFG certified? Do you have to have the certification ready by the time you apply on Sep 1 or by the rank order deadline or by match day ?

Thank you for your time !
