Are you graduating this year or next year? You need to keep about 6-8 months for step 1 , about 3-4 months for step 2 and about a month for CS. If you haven't graduated you can get electives in as well.
Ps. I didn't know someone who was graduating this year and applying for 2016 match is a fresh graduate !

If your school is a good school in your country try to apply for 2015 match ! As the years go by it's getting more competitive. You can easily finish step 2 in a couple of months I know people who have done it and made the match !

I would take CS before CK so you won't have the late results issue ! No problem Good luck also do you know if you take a year off after graduation would that be a problem ? Do you know anyone in your school who has matched with a timetable similar to yours?

thats a good piece of advice.
its usually better to apply as soon as possible. taking a year off i dont think so would be that much of a prob* fingers crossed*
people from my school, 99% go off for our own post-grad entrance exams for residency so no idea there. and few of the people who do give steps do it after a yr or 2yrs gap so that they get into a residency here and also can apply to Us.

Hi ! Do you have to do one year internship after this or do you graduate after your result is out ? Because that would change your yog accordingly for the match. I would say that the time between your graduation and the year you would start residency( not the year you apply for match) should preferably be 2yrs and not more especially if you don't have any USCE.
Also, cs prep takes around a month and like the op suggested you can give before your ck. Worst case, if you don't have the cs result when you apply, it shouldn't be too much of a problem. My cs result had come in Oct and I had managed to get almost 10 iv without it( but for me, I didn't need visa). Also, right after you graduate get your credentials verified by ecfmg so that the day your cs result comes you are ecfmg certified and you don't have to wait those extra weeks.

For step 1 , I think you can prepare well till Dec. Depends how confident you are with your NBME test papers. You will know if you are ready to take the exam.

I have about 2 years too from
YOG until I start residency (not until application) do you
Think this is considered a red flag ? The only clinical experience I have during THIS time is 1 month observership at a really good uni based hospital . I also did some volunteer work (medical and non medical) . Would this be considered a 'gap' in medical training? I have really good scores and electives and LORs. I'm just worrie about this gap

It all depends on the program you interview at and they see your application as a whole. I don't think your gap matters much as long as you keep volunteering/ shadowing/research etc. Just have a good reason for every aspect of your application and try not to be idle for too long.
I have 2yrs between my graduation and till the time I start my residency. I took almost an year to get my exams done with except cs, which I gave a little late. And in the other year I did some observerships and volunteering. And my yog was not an issue at my interviews. Just try to keep busy one way or other.

So your yog will come out to be somewhere this time in 2015 and you plan to apply in sep 2015, right ? So your yog would most probably be not a problem. It's doable to give your exams in this 1yr. Yes you will need to work hard but can be done. But do not compromise on your scores because those are what gets you interviews. If you feel you can't give all your exams in this 1yr, I am sure you can postpone your internship and then plan to do some electives here in US which is definitely an advantage. In that case you won't compromise your yog even. It's all what suits you best. If visa is an issue, plan some extra time for cs as sometimes visa can be denied. Not common but known to happen. I am not scaring you, just making aware of tentative timing aspects for match.
Personally, I would give most importance to scores and the rest after.

Yog is calculated from the time you graduate I.e finish up with all the requirements according to your college and receive your degree.
Cs prep needs around a month. Prepare it with someone who is planning to give the exam either via Skype or live partner. I had posted a thread regarding my cs in case you want some tips. A lot of people have posted theirs and that would be a good place to determine how to go about prep. Practice is the key for it. Good luck!

I would not be the best guide regarding visa issues because I didn't need one. I just know that one of my friends was rejected visa for cs. I don't think thats common though. Maybe there was some problem.
You can do externships but they are really hard to get and some are unnecessarily costly and won't be as good as doing electives in a university hospital ( which you can do as you have not yet graduated). If you plan to do some usce then you can give your cs exam with that and you won't have to travel to US again and again. Just one of the options. Preparing for CK is purely upto your time management.

Default Residency in Orthopedics

Hi Friends

I believe getting Residency in Orthopedics is really hard.

Can anyone suggest me any possibilities of Orthopedics Residency in US for foreign Medical graduate.

A)I have more than average scores in both Steps( USMLE).

B) I have few months of US clinical experiences in General surgery, trauma and orthopedics.

C) Permanent Residence status in USA.

D) Recently Completed Residency in Orthopedics and trauma surgery from home country(Asia).

Can I try for Orthopedics ?

Do you know any programs that are IMG friendly ( interested in Orthopedics)?

Please suggest me what will be the other residency options for me with above credential ( that will be easy for IMG in USA).

Please suggest me
Thanks in advance
