Dollar Sign Residency salary after taxes?

How much does an IM resident take home per month after taxes? I know it varies in different states.. Still if anyone can give a rough idea about it, considering different states..

You will receive a check every two weeks,

That check varies anywhere between $1,100 to $1,600 depending on the annual salary and the State Tax.

Annual residency salaries vary between ($42,000 to $50,000) for PGY1 position.

States such as New York and California have very high living expenses (renting, transportation, ..etc) compared to other States.

There's another source of income for some residents, called "moon lighting", which is you cover for someone else and take the money, but that option is usually reserved for PGY2 and PGY3 residents.

Also some residency program do offer other sources of income, for example in Washington University they give you extra allowances if you sign up for the ambulatory team (you escort patients in the ambulance).

It depends on which State you'll be staying, I'd say it's barely enough for a couple if you live in New York or California.

So it is the same to what is called " State income Tax " ??
since Texas & some states don't have State income Tax...so I will get all these 42-50 K without any tax ?

What about other taxes ? or we are not considered laborer during residency so no other taxes ?

Is there a difference in taxes between U.S citizen & who are not ?

Thank you,

There's two types of taxes. State and Federal. If a State does not take from you income tax, you still have to pay the federal tax, so you'll never get your 42-50K completely

Taxation is a complex process and it's beyond my capacity to answer all your queries, but definitely stuff like (having dependents, educational expenses, paying donations, ...etc) will lower the amount of tax you pay.

There's no difference between US citizen, or Permenant resident, or even people on Visas, they all get their W2 Form (salary income form) and they all pay taxes.
