Default Advise needed! Thank you

Hello All.
Im a future IMG. I have one more year to go. This summer I will finish all steps (besides 3rd).
I was thinking of applying for match this upcoming September,However in our medschool we write final exam only in september 2015 and only after get the diploma. Even know graduation ceremony is in June 2015.
So my problem is should i apply this year while still being a student, or should i wait another year?

Thank you!

PLEASE ADVISE

You'll have to wait because you need your medical school diploma and transcript to not only apply for ECFMG certification but also for licensure which are both needed to start residency.

mmpetrov, residency positions start in June/July. You do not need to be ECFMG certified to apply, and in some cases I have heard of programs that have matched candidates even if they did not already have ECFMG certification on match date.

However, to start working, you 100% need to be ECFMG certified, which means you MUST have your diploma. Then it can take additional months, depending on the processing time at your school, transportation, and other factors, until your final diploma is verified by the ECFMG.

To make things short, if you will receive your diploma in november 2015, you will receive ECFMG certification in February 2016 (optimistic estimate).
It does not make sense to participate in the 2015 match because you will not meet the requirements to start working.

On a positive note you can use the time to strengthen your application, which will give you a better shot at the 2016 match.

Good luck.
