Listening Low Step 1 Score apply this year?

Hi guys,
I really need some advice. my bf got his step 1 score 81 he was pretty shocked was doing pretty well in UW..don't know what could have happened so wrong...applied for a re-evaluation but not very enthusiastic about it.

Now We've got many qs

1. should he apply this year, he's still got step2 CS and CK to complete, has no USCE. so should he take it slow build some exp n then apply or should he do it this year.

2. do u think a couple match is a good idea? I've cleared CS and step 1 score is 99 and have 4 months of USCE, prep for step 2 CK now.
So if we go for a couple match will I be ruining my chances too? is there an option in couple match where if one doesn't get matched the other can accept it??
3. how do wv get observerships..sent sooo many emails so many docs..n no one has replied..
and finally does he really have a chance or should he just take lite and try for Indian PG entrances...

Guys pls b really honest not overtly optimistic!!!

thanks

He has chances if he's a fresh graduate (less than 3 years postgrad) and if he's applying to IM or FM or Peds.

He should try to get high score in CK and pass the CS from the first attempt.

You should both do USCE

Yes. you can apply as couple and it won't affect your chances. When you do the ranking, you can choose a program (alone) or in a couple.

Programs that do not like him (low score) will still like you (high score), your couple's connection would not affect the matching probability of each of you.

Couple's Match
Yes. your chances of getting interviews won't be affected by applying as a couple.

Observerships and connections
Yes. It's usually via connections you get observerships but it's not impossible without connections, you can still get it.

Americlerkships
I don't have a personal experience with them but according to this poll it seems they are doing well.
