Default Need a sincere advice

Hi everybody. I've been a silent follower of this wonderful forum, and I have noticed many of you are so kind to advice people in hard and tough situation that I encouraged myself to write this brief post. IMG, graduated in 2012, aiming for an IM residency. USMLE almost completed, with good scores (step 1 - 240+, step 2 ck - 250+, step 2 cs pending). I have completed about 5-6 months of clerkships (in IM) while as I was still a student and have strong LoRs. I was originally aiming to match 2015, but a research fellowship position (1 year initially) was offered to me in a top-three IM program, starting in July 2014. My understanding is that there are rumors about the lower chances of IMG to get residency positions due to the high number of US graduates that is increasing every year. Then, I was wondering if it is worth to delay my application (now aiming to match 2016, but with >1 year of research background with an incredibly strong research group), or if I should apply to match 2015 anyway. I have about 4-5 pubs already, but nothing impressive (impact factor <=5). What would you guys do in my position? Thank you very much for all your support.

I think it depends on what you want out of your residency. Do you aim for fellowships/hospitality/research centered future? Because your credentials are good and I think you should be able to get into good program based on that.
When does your fellowship start and end? Is it possible to apply for 2015 and be done with your 1yr position by June 2015 (when pgy1 mostly starts).

Thank you very much for your answer. The research fellowship is offered in the exactly same field I want to pursue my clinical fellowship after IM residency (yes, I aim for a very academic career in the future). It would start by July 2014, and end July 2015. Actually, that's not the real concern. The thing is that all that background would not work for the IM application, but only for future fellowship application (contacts there are really strong). As everything in this world, it has pro/cons. How much importance (cons) would it have to delay my application 1 more year, comparing to what I could gain from this experience (pros)?

Well I am assuming your research is in the same field of fellowship you are interested in. While it can get a little tougher in 2016 ( due to increased amg and do graduating) I don't think it will be impossible. If you think you can make really good LONG LASTING strong contacts who would help you with your residency interviews too, then you can consider the research more strongly. Do you think you would have a chance of getting interview from this program? If yes, that would be a really good opportunity.( Look at how many IMGs they have in their program). Plus if your research position is till July, then why not apply this year. If I was in that position I would like to get in residency first. ( but that's my opinion. Your priorities could be different.

I agree with the other posters, your scenario is one of the cases where it actually makes sense to wait an additional year. Based on what you posted you will have chances to match at your top 3 program depending on how the research fellowship works out. Good Luck !
