Default Is it necessary to get IM LORs for match in IM?

I'm an IMG aiming for IM. Do I need to get observerships/LORs specifically from IM? Will LORs written by attendings from other specialities (like peds, surgery) be good enough?

@fozia:
For IM, at least one letter in IM would definitely be useful (preferably at least 2, I would think). Other rec letters from peds and surgery can still support your application as long as they highlight your clinical strengths, professionalism and personality.

For psych, a good IM LOR would still be useful. Psych programs generally have 6 months of medical rotations in internship and programs will want to know that you are competent clinically. Ideally you will have at least 1 psych LOR if you're applying to psych.

I applied to psych and had 2 psych LORs and 1 ER LOR which worked fine.

Hope that helps.
