Question What is residency and residency match?

I am new here for taking usmle. i have some ideas about residency but i want to know clearly that what is residency? Is it like house job (internship) we do in our country or what?and It is for how many years. Is it for three years? or it varies from speciality to speciality? After doing residency what we are called? are we called MD? after residency we become a specialist or what?
What is a residency match?
My this question might be looking foolish but i need information because i am really interested in it.

  • Residency is the first in-house training years that all US doctors should take if they want to continue a clinical career.
  • It's somewhat like the internship we do in our countries specially the first year.
  • The first year is called PGY1 which means post graduate year one.
  • The duration varies between 3 to 7 years depending on the specialty you join.
  • When you finish the residency you will be a specialist in that field and you will be American Boards Eligible. If you pass the board exam you will then be American Board Certified.
  • After finishing your residency you can look for fellowships (further specialization) or you can start a mainstream job in any US hospital or private clinic.
  • The salary for residents is low compared to after residency years.
  • The residency match is managed electronically via a system called ERAS which stands for electronic residency application system, this system is run by AAMC which stands for Association of American Medical Colleges.
  • ERAS will help you apply to all the available residency programs throughout USA. You can start applying by September 1st of each year. However ERAS software is available for registration early July of every year.
  • You will use ERAS to send your documents such as LoRs, MSPE, Dean letter, Photograph, Medical school transcript, CV, and California letter to the residency programs.
  • Once you have applied and got interviews then you can apply to the match. The "Match" is run by NRMP. This system will "match" applicants' choices with the program choices. The match results come out on the third week of March each year.
  • The residency job start on June-July after that the match results.
