I wouldn't like to disappoint you,but it is extremely difficult...it is highly competitive...it needs extremely high scores in order to be competitive, this is the forst step, afterwards many years on research...neurosurgery was my first choice but i left the idea....i don't wat to spend so many yearsp reparing for residency and having a high possibillity not entering into neurosurgery...
except to this point,it is better to check first if you can handle the 7 years of residency in the US...it is not that simple...
in my opinion it is not worth it,because i do not like it so much, but if you really like neurosurgery you should try it...everything is possible...

As far as I know it s the least competitive from surgery specialties, but more competitive than medicine...i do not know what you should to to get a preliminary or categorical position...others in the forum may advise you...i think there is a topic about general surgery...
good luckk with everything you choose...

one of my friends matched in neurosurgery this year. she did a postdoc for 2 Years before applying and was pretty smart. so if you have decent scores and do a postdoc I guess its possible. same Goes for surgery. good luck .

I also believe that u should do what u r interested in. if not in US, then do it somewhere else...at ur home country. but do what u r interested in.

Hello cold play,,, I am not particularly interested in neurosurgery but just as a general info ,, I wished to know about ur friend who did post doc.Was she having US citizenship??? Coz as far as I had heard that it is difficult to get these post doc position without a long term visa!!! Though it can be done on a J1 visa ,, but then J1 is associated with other kind of problems.
Thanks.

It is a PGY1 one year position accreditaded by the ACGME, offered by surety departments. It is used by IMGS to apply to an advanced or categorical position (with the end goal of obtain a degree ) one year of preliminary position won't make you elegible for the the board. It is a must do for IMGs
