Default J1 visa and ECFMG Certification

I was wondering if you needed to be ECFMG certified to apply for J1 visa sponsorship (i.e. the application to get the DS2019 form from ECFMG). I have the process initiated but the document list doesn't list ECFMG certificate as a document you need to upload. I should be ECFMG certified by mid May but I'm just wondering if I can go ahead and apply for the J1 visa sponsorship now since I'm going to be ECFMG certified soon anyway. Does anyone know for sure?

Thanks!

P.S. I'm also Canadian if that matters at all.

It doesn't matter if you are from Canada or India. The laws is the same for all who are non-US citizens/Permanant Residents. You can not appply for the J1 until you get matched into a program that offers J1. Many programs don't offer J1, in that case, you will apply for a J1 through ECFMG. You will apply for residency, attend interviews and await the match result on a visitor visa. The only advantage of being Canadian is that you dont need a visitor visa to go to the US.

I already matched. I'm sorry I didn't make that clear but I thought it was a given since I'm posting on this thread. My question was regarding applying for the DS 2019 from ECFMG while awaiting ECFMG certification (just need credentials verified at this stage). I may just have to call ECFMG and ask.
