USA Two Different Double Specailties (Residencies) in USA!

Hi dear colleagues,

I am just wondering if it is possible for somebody for example get into family medicine and then after finishing it, he applies for another specialty for example dermatology, and get that specialty too?
If yes, how much is that person chance to be match in second specialty?
Is it negative point to have studied another specialty?

Thanks,

Info The possibility of Double Residencies

Yes, that's possible. However, there's one limitation. The two residencies should not come to a total of more than 7 years. Because Medicare has set a limitation of 7 years of residency training.

I know a friend who finished Orthopedics residency and then he tried to switch to Ophthalmology but he was rejected for that reason.

The example you set of FM then Dermatology is possible I guess. In fact it's a good idea to get into dermatology if you are an IMG. Because dermatology is very competitive and usually reserved for AMGs.

Your chance of getting into the second residency would be higher because by that time you had 3 years of USCE and PDs would love to take you. However, you have to show them some interest like by doing dermatology related electives and research during your FM residency.

thanks for your answer dr.
and there would be other questions too!
1- so then in our second residency we won't need to take internship or PGY1 again as we have taken it before?
2- where could i find the laws about this matter and about 7 year limitation you had mentioned, any official site?

thanks

Answer to Q1/
It depends on which type of dermatology you go to
if it is categorical then you still need to do PGY1
if it is advanced then you enter in PGY2

Answer to Q2/
These two page can help you
http://www.cbo.gov/doc.cfm?index=17&type=0&sequence=2
and
https://www.aamc.org/advocacy/medicare/

Note) Medicare is paying the residency programs to train residents. The money comes from Medicare not from the hospitals. That's why there are limitations on the number of residents accepted and limitations in the salary.
