Help Need advice with match timeline

Hi,
I am a U.S citizen, my exam dates are step 2 CS-May 6, step 2 CK-June 30th and step 1 on August 30th 2011.
After reading various posts about the importance of getting ECFMG certified and applying by September 1st, I am panicking that I might be 3-5 weeks late as the last exam (step 1) result will be received on Sept 21st and ECFMG certification will take another 1-2 weeks.

Please advise me on adjusting my exam dates so I'll have a fair chance at 2012 match.
I have 5 LORs from U.S doctors and am working very hard for my exams, aiming for 90s.
I want to desperately make it for 2012 match.

Please advice, anyone.

Thanks.

Default I suggest you skip this season

I would advise you not to hurry up in taking the steps in the schedule you specified. Two months for Step 1 is certainly not enough as you can see here
http://www.usmle-forums.com/usmle-st...-step-1-a.html

USMLE Scores are very important to get you the residency you want.

I suggest you postpone your plans to 2013 match.

If you insist on 2012 match, then there's no more squeezing can be done. Just accept the fact that you will be applying in early October.

I wouldn't suggest that you apply without Step 1 Score as it's very important as stated here Why USMLE Step 1 Score is more important than USMLE Step 2 Score

Probably taking Step 1 before CK is a good idea, this way you can apply in ERAS with Step 1 Score (leaving CK score to later) but again, I suggest you skip the 2012 season and take more time in studying and getting high scores.

Hello drj10!

Many programs do not require ECFMG certification to apply, but it is understandable that you want to be certified by September 1st. The earlier you apply, the better. Many students take the CS exam soon after a relatively short period of preparation so as not to forget all they learned (which is why a CS course is so valuable). With this in mind, you could move up your Step 1 and Step 2 CK exam dates.

Best of luck!

Default Thanks for the advice

Thank you StepTaker and Kaplan medical for your valuable advice. I really need to think this through. I prepared for usmle step 2 ck for 4 months and I didn't have the guts to take it and now everything is pushed back and not enough time to make it by Sept 1st. One good thing is I have step 2 ck knowledge fresh in my mind, that's why I am taking step 2ck after CS.
The thought of foregoing 2012 and waiting till 2013 makes me sad as what will I do until then, I am an old graduate and I'll be getting older. Well I have a lot to think about and make a wise decision.
Any more suggestions?

Default drj10

Hi drj10

As a former Associate Residency Program Director, I agree with StepTaker's advice to you. I reviewed thousands of ERAS apps and noted rushing USMLE Steps and taking them out of order will only have a detrimental effect on your residency application. My advice would be to reschedule your steps in order and be very well-prepared for each and every exam. Low scores or failures will doom your chances of being selected for an interview. High USMLE scores, a stellar application, good interview skills and a little strategic planning will go a very long way.
As for your question regarding ECFMG certification, it's good to have though not completely necessary. There are a lot of ways to enhance your residency application over the coming year, use it your advantage!
All the best!

Default application for urology fellowship

Hi

I am board certified in urology from outside USA. I am a green card holder and I live part time in NY. I'm in my final preparation for step 1 exam.
Can I apply for fellowship before finishing step 2 this year? i.e after completing step 1 only?

Thanks a lot.
