Unhappy very low step 1 score please help

I am beyond crushed, and shaking as I type this. I just received my score of 192/79. I did not do NBME but on the usmle world SA I scored 218 and 229. I felt as though the exam was very hard and I struggled with many questions but I thought that was normal. I thought I'd at least get a 210.

I am a 2010 foreign graduate and a US citizen. from browsing FREIDA I saw most places have a cut off of either 80 or 85. Do I still have a reasonable chance at matching? Is there a list of programs that are known to accept applicants like me? can anyone direct me to a thread or share their experience with matching with such low scores?

Please advise. I am trying to find observership but that seems impossible as well with such a low score.

I feel like giving up.

I can relate with your pain, even I have similar feelings ,I received my result today.
I had quite fine assessment score like 221 NBME 6, uwsa-238 and exam also went OK if not easy, though some blocks were very tough, but when I opened my score today I was shocked--I did very bad and got a miserable 207/86.

I want to know what are my chances for 2012 residency--
my other stats are--step2 85/205
cs--will take in June

and yes I need visa
2010 graduate
No USCE.

Stop It's not the end of the game

I just checked for you matcharesident.com and entered your scores and I found 922 programs available for unsweet and 735 programs available for ineedresidency.

Although that list might not be very accurate but it gives an idea that there are many programs accepting your scores.

Now I think the next step is to fortify your profile with good stuff such as doing USCE, getting good LoRs, making connections, doing research and publications, and acing the other steps.

I do believe that it's not the end of the game for both of you.

Dear Unsweet,

StepTaker brings up several very good points: there is definitely hope for you in the Match, and there are a lot of other areas that may help improve the overall desirability of your application for residency. USMLE scores are not the only factors considered on a residency application, and high scores alone are not a guarantee for success in obtaining a residency position. I suggest that you take a look at the National Program Directors Survey published in the Journal of Academic Medicine by clicking on the following link: http://journals.lww.com/academicmedi...s_of_a.24.aspx

This survey features the selection criteria for residency and is very helpful in identifying the top factors considered by Resident Directors. You may also be interested in taking a look at one of previous posts titled: http://www.usmle-forums.com/residenc...ive-index.html Reviewed by: ED

Hello futuremd,

Sorry for the extremely delayed response. A score of 83 should not affect your application too much since as an AMG, you will have an extensive amount of U.S. clinical experience and exposure to the U.S. healthcare system. This is the opportunity for you to further build your application by obtaining good clinical evaluations and good LORs. As we had mentioned to unsweet in the post above, it is very important to understand the overall competitiveness of your application and to not fixate on individual components.

Sincerely,
Emerald

Don't be hard on yourself Igusmle,

I know of many IMGs who were able to successfully obtain residency with low usmle scores. Focus on doing fantastic on your other Steps, and in building an overall competitive application. I would suggest that you visit the following post to learn about other ways, aside from USMLE scores, to enhance the desirability of your residency application. http://www.usmle-forums.com/residenc...ive-index.html

Sincerely,
Emerald

Emerald, thank you for your nice words, they are really helpful to me at this difficult time. I told myself I would rather fail badly on medicine than succeed in anything else. I will never give up until they tell me to.
People are so kind and helpful on this website, I wish everybody's dreams come true in the new yr!

You're welcome Igusmle. DO NOT let anyone cause you to give up on your dream. Although your journey towards residency may look different from others, that does not mean that you will not ultimately succeed. I know of many IMGs that can attest to this.

Do not hesitate to contact me if you have any other questions or concerns in the near future.

Sincerely,
Emerald

Hey ACA.

I was wondering what are my chances of matching into a residency in the united states. Im a current fourth year Caribbean medical school student. I am almost done all of my core rotations (currently doing my last core family) in the united states. All of my elective rotations will also be done in the united states. My step 1 grade was 212/89 first attempt. Going to be writing my CS in march. CK in mid/early july. Im also a canadian so im going to be writting my MCEE to ensure i can apply for a visa in order to enter the united states for residency... With all that information so far, would you say theres a good chance of matching into a residency such as family or internal medicine.

Also was wondering, im slightly confused as to how one apply's to the match and what sort's of deadlines there are. My main concerns is When? do I have to hand in all the required scores/lor's/resumes and etc to ERAS. Also was wondering when a medical school student needs to finish his medical school rotations in order to be eligible to accept an residency, i heard from a friend that each student usually has to be done medical school by may or june of the year they matched in order to enter residency. Im applying for the 2013 match

Thank you for being so resourceful on this website!

Hello JJtheMD,

Sorry for my delayed response. A quick and simple way to figure out how competitive you are for U.S residency would be to visit the following link: http://www.usmle-forums.com/residenc...ive-index.html. I could directly discuss the results with you if you PM me your personal contact information.

In order for you to have to greatest chance of receiving the most interviews during the 2013 Match season, you should have your common application form, personal statements, LORs, ECFMG certification, and other residency-relevant documents fully prepared by August of 2012, so that you may readily submit them to ACGME accredited residency programs on September 15, 2012. Be sure to frequently visit the following links to view important dates for ERAS and keep track of the 2013 Match Timeline through the NRMP. Lastly, medical students must successfully obtain their final diploma prior to entering graduate medical education, which primarily begins in July.

Let me know if you have any other questions and I look forward to hearing back from you soon!

Sincerely,
Emerald

Default very low step 1 score .. completely shattered.

I am an IMG from India, got my step 1 score today 205/78 and I am completely shattered as I think my residency chances are over !
I cried the whole evening.
just 2 months back I got acceptance for observership at Cleveland Hospital Ohio and was preparing to file for visa but I don't think there is any use since it's going to be extremely hard for me now to get residency in paeds.

May be I should focus on Indian PG now, I am just completely heart broken and don't know what to do next??
even if I try to work hard for step 2, what is the guarantee that I will get great score. I am just hopeless now.

I am an IMG and in same trouble of low step 1 score 205. I checked my status in the matcharesident.com but I was confused a bit.
With my step 1 score, I was getting eligibility for like 1600 programs without visa and 1200 with visa. Since I am looking forward to improve my score in step 2, so hypothetically when I put step 2 score around 238/99, I was surprised to see the same result. Do they consider only step 1 score no matter how you perform in step 2??

Default Low step 1 score

Hello everyone,
I am an IMG who graduated last year. I just recieved my step 1 score : 203.
I am very disheartnened since I had scored 240/600 on uwsa and 222 on nbme 7. The real test was tougher than UW n nbme. I knew after the test that I would not get a good score but was not expecting below 210.
I wanted to apply for radiology but obviously that has gone down the drain.
I have done 1 elective and 6 months research at mass general hospital, boston in IR ( 3 publications, 1 poster presentation and contributed in Harvards imaging atlas) and 2 pretty strong LORs.
I want to ask, where does this score put me ? Should I give up my dream of doing residency in the US or start studying for step 2 ck. any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you ...
